2 years ago during our winter vacation from university, my roommate walked in and said it would be cool if we rode motos across the length of Vietnam…. I told him that sounded great.

We rented Suzuki GD110s (ridiculously cheaply made bikes) from Style Motors in Saigon. The much better option is getting a cb150 or crf250 but we were budget backpackers and went with the cheapest option.

The boys at Style bungeed our backpacks to some improvised rack systems and then handed us an ice cold beer each and sent us out the door to brave Saigon’s utterly insane rush hour traffic. Unfortunately 2 of our 4 man group had never ridden a motorcycle before and so not only had to learn Vietnam’s tacit traffic laws but also how to operate a clutch…. Amazingly no one died in the first hour despite many narrow misses.

As we got out of the city and onto some open roads we were finally able to unleash the GD’s mighty 8 horsepower and test the upper limits of our 35-45mph maximum speed….

But disaster soon struck while zooming through banana farm backroads.

It was to be the first of many many crashes…
But a hospital visit, 9 stitches, and $13 dollars later we were back on our way!

Another day another crash...

These guys were faster than a Formula One pit crew. 50¢ in parts (patch kit) + 50¢ in labor.

Another day another crash... our worst of the trip. police sent a team to make up a fake forensics scene report...

Phong Nha is a town surrounded by caves (home to the biggest one in the world). Viet-Cong used these caves as storage for supplies headed south on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. In an effort to destroy these supplies USAF planes were, at the height of the war, bombing this area every day week in and week out. Many of the creators have been left in remembrance and dot the fields to the left of this photo for all to see.

At last, after around 2,000 miles we reach the far northern Ha Giang region bordering China. The most unique, remote, and beautiful "roads" and scenery I have ever seen.

Small villages are connected only by these sidewalks that cut through the jagged karst mountains. Unforgettable!!

Another day, another trip to the mechanic to unbend a foot peg. Zane was happy to provide childcare in the meantime.

Zane's film camera got some timeless frames from a long strand of deserted beach near Danang

I mean - dayum. Just dayum. Wow - great report; crazy adventure. You Americans are nutz. :Port :ride

I remember Vietnamese rest stops but not the snow! Thank you for the pictorial adventure and reminder of the warm friendly people.

Hilarious.

Great photos, thank goodness you weren't on more powerful bikes.

Noobs can get into plenty of trouble with low HP as you know.

Awesome!!! Thanks for taking us along!

Nice write up!

The crashes….were they all by the newbies? That’s nuts that two of your group had never ridden before.

Ah, to be young and dumb. Some of my best stories resulted from bad decisions.

Yes. Luke and I had years of riding experience in the states and never had any issues on this trip. But the other two had no seat time and had a much harder go of it.
