Safety Features on New Motorcycles

So many people beating up on Lou..

incidentally - I just met that friend from HS again, the one who weighs 290 now(DAMN!)- & who I was able to goad into doing all sorts of stupid stuff.. like picking up transmissions and throwing them in shop class. Cutting off the roofs of cars with air chisels.. crashing his dads car in the corn fields.. Aww man.. so many memories..

That's what BARF is like to me. Shop class-- and our teacher, Budman is sitting over in the corner giggling at our stupid antics. Fucking love it here.

I'll handle this Lou, as your self appointed lawyer, I suggest you take the fifth.

The day I start having to use the ignore function is the day I need to just quit BARF.

Then I think you miss the point of the ignore function. It's not to silence people you disagree with; it's to ignore people who add nothing of value to the discourse, but in fact detract from it, usually in a troll like manner. I agree, ignoring people wantonly would defeat the purpose of a discussion forum like this, but it's a great feature if used judiciously. Try it, you may find you like it.

Back on topic, I've never been much of an ABS zealot because I ride so defensively and rarely ever find myself in a hard braking situation. Until last week. First time in at least 10 years I've had to do a panic stop, all due to my inattention, and ABS saved my ass. I'm a convert.

Again, if I don't have the ability to skim over someone who is only trolling, it'd be time for me to leave. I have enough self-control to do that. I don't need a pretty much non-effective ignore function to do that. Furthermore, just because someone is being a douchecanoe in one thread doesn't mean they might not have a valuable input in another thread. Why chance missing that just because I can't learn how to ignore on my own without the electronic aid?

Let's assume for a moment that this is the case. Let me ask everyone on this thread - has ANYONE here had a negative experience with ABS on a bike manufactured in the last 3-4 years? It just seems to me that all the hating on ABS comes from people that have either never ridden a bike with it, had a negative experience with early-gen ABS from a decade ago, or just shun technology in general (which then begs the question of why they're on a computer posting on an internet forum)

I quit buying new bikes in the 80's, when you could get 1100cc for less than $3k. My '07 KTM has it, but it hasn't been functional since day 1. I should probably fix and give it a try.

There Ya have it. Riders that are so mentally, un-disciplined they will allow themselves to drift into, inattention, even once...look for help.

Course that help might be wrong also..but what the hell, spaced out boy wasn't getting it done.

What you left a little muddy was that the NHTSA report said 10 times as many unhelmeted riders in non-helmet-law states died as unhelmeted riders in helmet-law states...to which everybody should say, "no f-ing shit." Almost nobody rides without a helmet in helmet-law states, where almost nobody rides with a helmet in non-helmet-law states, so of course there will only be a few deaths of unhelmeted riders in helmet law states. (I think the number was around 180 vs. 1800).

What's amazing is that there are deaths of ANY unhelmeted riders in helmet-law states! It's kind of like saying, "in countries where tobacco is banned and not sold, the deaths from smoking-related cancers are extremely low.

Again--no f-ing shit.

I also want to say that your posts may be the only thing on BARF I read where I don't feel like I'm completely wasting my time.

Just in case someone read the article closely enough to pick up this bit of nonsense (first paragraph):
states without helmet laws showed ten times more fatalities than those that mandated helmet use when riding a bike
That isn't even remotely accurate. :wtf

It was linked to another article from Wall St. Cheat Sheet, which said the same thing:
States that do not require motorcycle riders to wear helmets had 10 times more fatalities than those with a universal helmet law, the NHTSA data showed.
But the source, a NHTSA press release, makes a much different statement:
Ten times as many riders died not wearing a helmet in states without a universal helmet law than in states with such laws.
In 2012, states without an all-rider helmet law had 57% more deaths than helmet-law states. But they also had 49% more motorcycles than helmet-law states.

I would be glad to have ABS on a street bike, though would prefer a switch to cut it out when wanted. None on the track thank you.

It does happen, though. In the Bay Area 2012, 7 of 59 deaths were reported to be unhelmeted in the US DOT database. For example: Two were on unlicensed dirtbikes in residential neighborhoods; one was at .15 BAC at 11:00pm; one was at .04 BAC on a rented Harley; one was at .18 BAC doing something real stupid on a busy rural highway; one, likely a noob, was on a 250 Ninja in a residential neighborhood with a unhelmeted female passenger.

Thank you. That means a lot coming from you.

As long as the helmeted statistics are being brought out....
The numbers are as bogus as the Beanie helmet is.

Rider (that includes passenger) wearing a totally useless novelty helmet and is dead at the scene....Report says they were helmeted.

Crash scene data gathering isn't going to rate helmets...
