So heres the story, my lil brother will be 8 this month. This weekend he asked if i knew how to skateboard. i said yes, cuz i do. but i cant do tricks or anything crazy. i havent been on one for like 6 years lol

Id like to get him a board and whtnot for his birthday. and one for myself.

wheres the best place to buy one? local skate shops or bigger chain stores. should i get him anything besides a helmet?

Heard good things about Ground Zero on Arden Way. Never been there, though.

If you're going to get him a helmet, be sure to get him a chest protector too so it won't hurt as much when he gets beat up for wearing a helmet (had to, kidding :twofinger)

I need a new board, too :(

I'd recommend getting a longboard first because they're easier to balance on. That was how I started. After getting the hang of riding, I got myself a normal skateboard so I could do tricks. In addition to a helmet, wrist guards are good as well. Whenever I fell, I would use my wrists to keep me from going face first into the ground. My wrists would have a bunch of cuts and scrapes and not to mention, they hurt plenty.

dont get an 8 yr old a longboard...that would be a nightmare for him. They do make smaller boards then the regular size ones you see. These boards are made for little kids. I suggest getting him one of those...they are the exact same material and everything, just smaller

please dont go to the chain stores...support the local shops

:thumbup that was what i wanted to do...

Please let me know how it turns out because I'm looking for a decent skate shop in the Sacramento area as well. I haven't been on a board in years and want to get back on.

thanks for the links. there is a surfandskate on my way to work, ill check them out this week. heard good things about ground zero also.

CCS for sure! (ccs.com) :D It was one of the only stores I'd order things from. That and local shops if I didn't want to wait.

That sounds like a good idea. I started skating on trick boards and longboards just are not the same not to mention that they're huge, much faster and a bit awkward at times.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

I lived in Davis while Ground Zero became a hole-in-the-wall to the store it is now. I'm not saying it's the best store around (OogaBooga in Vacaville was the best), but it's way more "LOCAL" than CCS...
...dot com.:x

haha.. Ground Zero is alright... a little on the pricey side for some items... but watcha gonna do. They're the only skate shop in Davis.

then you won't be one of the cool kids i thought you knew:teeth

That only lasts until you are good...

You don't see the pro's doing vert getting laughed at for wearing full pads and a helmet...

But then again who am I to talk, I used to do downhill skateboarding (boards long and VERY low, like 3/4").

When I first started I would ride in a full tuck at 45-50mph on long mountain roads without even a helmet on ahaha.

Then I got a full face.

Never started getting to the point where I wore full leathers (lots of the hardcore guys do).
