Tailgate extender question

This question is to settle an argument with a friend. I always transport my bike in the back of my truck with the tailgate down. Securely strapped in. He says it’s illegal to transport like that without a tailgate extender around the back of the bike. I can’t find anything online to prove or disprove this. But I think I’m right because I see a lot of guys transporting without one.
Thanks in advance.

You're fine, your friend is wrong.

I believe if the load extends more than 3 feet beyond the tail lights you need to have a red flag in the daytime and a red light at night attached at the end of the load?

Yes, but it's 4 feet.

Good to know. I've wondered about my 10' kayak in my 8' truck bed. I figured I was good as I had that 3' number in my head. Nice to know I have an extra foot.
