A big post on tires

^^ Sorry if I was unclear / incorrect. I understand and agree with what you say, the point about the aspect ratio was to indicate what is measured vertically to get the aspect ratio. I had understood that it was the sidewall that was measured, but if it's something else, OK. What is actually measured / designed for?

For the resulting shape of a tire on a narrower rim, what you say makes sense. I shouldn't have guessed about what shapes might result, but should have just noted that the shape does change and people should be aware of that. (And let whoever give the appropriate details.)

No problem. Communicating about these concepts can be really difficult over the internet, which is why I was looking for feedback to get the point across more clearly :thumbup

I believe you are correct in that the aspect ratio measures the height of the sidewall. I'll double check on a tire tonight. I hadn't even thought about that.

For the most part, the change in shape from running one size up or even 2 sizes up isn't noticible to your average rider. Some may even feel that a fatter tire is "more stable" as you've got more contact patch on the ground and that will slow the steering on the bike. There is a difference in profile, how extreme the effect is will vary depending on the tire, the bike, and the skill and riding style of the rider.

Dear Tire Geek,

Thanks.. Good write up.

What tires should I use on my KLR650 when I want to do a track day?

Sincerely,
Tire challenged

Well, whatever you do, don't use the tires that come on a CR500, as I hear those break loose real easy!

:laughing

nice write-up conan

In the "warming up the tires" part, you should note that weaving like an idiot isnt an effective way to get heat in the tires :cool

I thought it was pretty effective the way it was. :laughing

Avon makes sticky tires for vintage racing that are sticky and slide very predictably,am 21/22/23 enough grip to scrape footpegs on an xr650l

Glad to hear it helped you :)
Oh, I am glad this got bumped. I forgot to thank you for your efforts.
:thumbup

Now, get all those temp settings (hot and cold) for track tires, street tires, and trailer tires. We can put them in a spread sheet and start a pool.
:twofinger

What are the names of those tires?

It was the AM 22 and AM 23 but I just looked in parts unlimited online catalog and they appear to be discontinued.

You're welcome!

PSI settings...christ, I don't remember the PSI settings for my own tires without checking the book. :laughing

Aww :( Thanks for the heads up anyways :)

That doesn't mean you can't get them from avon or someone else
AM22 AM23

Well written. Now I can safely blame my flat spot on incorrect tire pressure as opposed to too much superslab!:laughing

Ill BUMP this thread ... helped me pick out some new tires and actually know what I wanted.
