CalTrans fired inspectors on Bay Bridge who found faulty Chinese welds.

Faulty welds on Chinese steel is a common occurence i couldnt count on both hands the number of times jobs ive been on have been delayed due to this problem.

No shit, it is some dirty steel. Porosity takes over the weld from the crappy steel. It gave me a learnin', I'll tell ya.

I've had to do some repairs on stuff made with the chinito steel. I had to treat it like cast iron. :laughing

Im a Carpenter not a welder but i have heard enough Ironworkers bitching about Chinese steel to take there word as truth on the subject.

Wasn't the expiration date of the contract set BEFORE any reports were made?

Yes, but the decision not to renew the contract was made after the reports about faulty welds had been coming in for some time.

I think your timeline is a little messed up. The safety contractor was raising concerns before CalTrans let their contract expire.

RTFA.

Read the fucking article? :laughing Sounds like you're a bit too emotionally invested in this for some reason...just lose out on a $63M contract by any coincidence? :p

My timeline is fine. If the subcontractor was OH so concerned about safety and not disgruntled their contract wasn't renewed, then why is it we're only hearing about how terrible it is after they weren't renewed? If it was so important to them to get the word out why didn't they do it before the contract expired?

My point is simple enough, and that is to apply critical thinking to what you're reading instead of taking it purely at face value. The last welding issue on the Bay Bridge was a sterling example of why you should think about who is raising the flag and what their motivations might be in doing so before you jump to whatever conclusion you want to.

Oh nevermind...I just noticed that you're the OP. Your choice of a false and inflammatory subject line (the contract expired, it was not terminated) tells me more than enough of where you're coming from. Good day!

Because you'd be under contract to report it to caltrans? :confused

And how would that prevent them from going to the media with a tip before the contract expired? It wouldn't. Reporters keep sources secret all the time.

The motivation is suspect.

:wtf

I think your logic is skewed there.

Again, I can say that chinese steel is suspect.

I think your logic is skewed there.

And what, exactly, is skewed about it? Why do you think it is ridiculous for me to suggest the source of the complaint may have an ulterior motive for going to the media with the story? I mean, other than the fact that you don't think much of Chinese steel. I get that already. Do you have any other reason?

I don't think so. But I have first hand experience with welding engineered steels.

+1 when used with what I fixed below...

Faulty Chinese metal is a common occurence

I do ALOT of work with airsoft guns. ranging in all levels of "expense". Let me tell you. ALL of the guns coming out of china are of PISS POOR metal content and quality. Ironically, Hong Kong and Japan are some of the BEST metal qualities I have seen.

China seems to have an emblazed "Lets make everything everyone else does, but cheaper, faster, MORE!!!" attitude. Some people think that china will continue to dominate the world market with this attitude.

It's only a matter of time before EVERYONE pulls their heads out of their ass, and notices the shitty quality of the products.

As long as people keep buying their shit (and they have for years now) it doesn't matter, does it?

Our retailers are more concerned with the cost than the quality, especially Walmart. But that's because their customers don't seem concerned about it because they think that they're getting a good deal. Think about that.

Such is the system as it is now. Over time people will notice that china products just don't cut it $ for $ over time. It's simple math that people will realize over time. Unfortunately, time is the issue, more then the product or money actually. Or correctly said, time is the important issue.

thats what happens when you have 7 year olds welding shit in sweatshops:rofl

Umm..... Saying that the inspector should leak the weld problem to the media, because they'd remain anonymous. Especially when they would like their contract to be renewed is flawed. Especially when you are in a contract to report to your customer.

Not to mention, for all we knew, the media may have been informed. It just wasn't as sensational of a story until the firm got canned.

im in the inspection business

i wish we got a $63 million contract

i woulda got a big bonus this last year :(

Damn...

I can testify to substandard ZPMC welds and overall product. If you have a problem they ignore you. They only take care of the guy securing the bids.

Don't trust the guy with a bamboo hardhat.

Nobody gives a shit until someone dies. It's how they justify the $7 million cranes here, that would have cost $14 millon if built by a reputable company.
