FINALLY - Lane Sharing is supported in CA

Driving down 880 a rider passes by lane sharing.

He was honking his horn the whole way.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP thumb cramp BEEP BEEP

I see something new every day.

Three weeks ago or so there was an HD rider revving AND beeping.

That doesn't sound good. Hopefully just a mistake.

Good news!

I'm still putting details together, but I talked to Mark Pope at CHP this morning and he tells me the CHP is still in 100% support of splitting, but word came down from outside the CHP to not publish the guidelines as "guidelines."

Good conversation—I'll share more as I work through the details.

Hmmm.... Guess I get to ask Officer Pope what up too!

What else could they be called...?

Recommendations, suggestions...?

Future law.. :jaded I always felt as this subject came up and guidelines issued that eventually they would work there way into Law. And likely some politician would think they should lower and adjust because they think they are saving lives. At some point no doubt there will be a battle cry given.

Perhaps "strategies."

Riders need to raise their voices on this, and continue to be good ambassadors. Things quieted down when SB350 was no longer an issue to rally around, but we all need to be continually working on this issue. Unless there's a law—and if there's going to be, we need to be involved in shaping it.

Love the new CHP commercial on TV with car, hardley Davidson, and panel van.
Good add!

That is awesome... like we won the gun control battle... haha.. :rofl

I've got 2 questions about the 2 following mentioned points.

1) Is it a MUST to remain no more than 10MPH? (meaning would it be illegal if you're going over 10MPH than cars? I say this cuz during traffic rush they go 10 MPH sometimes, when a biker could go 25-35PMH easily)

2) The word advisable sounds it's an advise, not the law. Can someone clarify that? Can you NOT lane-split "legally" if the traffic is going over 30MPH?

Thanks!

1)Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials.

2)It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster – danger increases as overall speed increases.

There's no speed limit for lane-sharing outside of the one posted for everyone else. Use your best judgement for what's safe for the conditions, though. You can be cited for unsafe speed for the conditions.

I'm glad you're optimistic. I am still worried :laughing :|

This is my concern too...

It should be noted that you can be cited even following the posted guidelines. They are not laws.

I was splitting in traffic that was moving 25-30 with a +5mph speed delta and I was knocked over and left for dead. Had I been going faster all that would have happened is I would have hit the ground harder. As it was I had no time to react because I was right next to the drivers door when the driver came into me and hit the end of my bars and knocked me down.

That's really slow. Split faster, you won't give them so much time to hit you.

This, within reason. Don't speed too fast or the cagers won't see you coming.

Been a while since this thread was updated.

CHP commissioner Farrow has stepped down before issuing the guidelines. This is likely going to mean it will be some time before they are issued and the media blitz that goes with it is started.

Very disappointing. I have a meeting Wednesday and hope to get an update, but for now they are on stand by.

It's like it's July 2014 all over again...

Where lane splitting was still legal?

I still think there are laws that already exist that cover splitting.

Speed limit, reckless driving, unsafe lane change etc.

Guidelines are great and all, but I'm not too worried with them or concerned about them.

Just the guidelines mess, which is what makes it "legal" in the minds of everyone who doesn't ride a bike. "Because without rules, how can it be legal?!oneone"

Riding into work on 680 I had a van with a Colorado plate cut in front of me to block me from splitting. I think it must be illegal to split in Colorado and this guy appointed himself misinformed CHP to handle the perceived problem.

Between this setback and al the shit going on with Carnegie, I'm getting pretty fucking tired of all this push-back and conflict (which seems to be gathering momentum on nearly all fronts)
:mad

He saw me. It was an intentional block.
