Is Ace Cafe Really closing?

Go for it. I'm pretty familiar with the bar business in the city. I dont buy that city ordinances dont allow a bar in that location and the that the owner is doing the city a favor and shutting down the ACE. ABC wouldnt have issued a lic for the location in the first place if it wasnt legal to so (I know from first hand experience). Now, they do have a 41 lic which legally is supposed to generate at least 50% of their business from food..... but that is rarely enforced unless there have been problems at the bar.

Edit - just for the record. I have no inside info on what is happening. Just my opinion.

I think you misunderstood me. They can't have a bar in the Armory building. He wants to own the bar where Ace is now. That way he can keep all the money for himself, especially if he makes it Kink-themed.
since he owns that building too, he can refuse to renew the lease when it comes up. That is what he's doing. He's certainly not doing the City any favors, nor any to the moto-riders therein. :thumbdown

I understand that Kink has a full on bar on their premises that is used as a movie set and also for company parties. Perhaps they were in a grey area that the city decided to obstruct, and now they need another bar to use as a set. Thats the only reason I can think of for the Ace to be mistreated this way.
What a shitty development. I hope Ace can relocate and remain open. It's my landing spot when I come home from out of town rides, good place to decompress with your fellow riders, and the food is spectacular :(

Man that sucks, this guy can just do whatever the hell he wants eh? :thumbdown

While I understand the sentiment, it's his building. If he wants to paint it puke yellow and sell flamingo turds that's his call...as it should be.

I saw this on FB, not sure exactly what to make of it since I don't personally know the people involved:

Michelle Chuor per rob: this is not true, but we will be closing Sunday May 2. Last night is April 27th. don't believe anything about this on facebook unless it's from me.

They should move to El Rincon at 16th/Harrison, just a few blocks away. The ABC just closed that place down for all the trouble it causes and it would be nice to see it as a bar instead of a juvenile party place. Plus its bigger and I believe they still have a kitchen inside.....just a thought

Perhaps they could try to muscle in to Folsom street where the old Ace Cafe was back in the early 90s?
Sad sad sad.

Not naming any names but don't we know some Barfers who work at Kink? Maybe they could tell us the inside scoop (assuming they know anything about it)...

I am sure there is a reason. Actually I thought Kink had done good things for that neighborhood (because they have). I don't want a reason to think otherwise.

non-public club doesn't need any LQ license on their premises, no?

anyway, subbed.
maybe they just want to open a Kink Vibrations store front ...

hehehehe Kink Vibrations

I find it a little hard to believe . but who knows. kink has always had some type of bar on set

I doubt Peter wants to run a bar .. my guess is sales of the porno are down and they need the money

Whoa, I thought this thread was about a hardware store.:laughing

Luckily I was wrong:twofinger

I would imagine Kink.com has a lot of power tools on premisis.:shocker

Having a bar shooting set - even if its stocked with real booze and working taps - is a very far cry from running a legitimate bar business where you intend to sell to the public.

That said, if Kink owns the building and wants to run a bar of their own creation, that's their own prerogative. Sucks for the Ace devotees, but that's the business of having a landlord.

Though to be honest, I was never enamored with the place. Lack of a full liquor license was a big knock against, race presentation was pretty hackneyed and indoor smoking was a total dealbreaker for me. Though to be fair, I never invested in the community there and I haven't been by in years.

Good pulled pork sandwich though.

I thought this was going to be about the "real" Ace Cafe.
The one in London.

I'm sorry to hear that the Ace Cafe in SF is closing, but you have to admit, it's not a cultural icon the way the Ace Cafe in London is.

I would love to address some of the misconceptions and inaccuracies in this thread, but at this moment, I can't. I would like to say that the original post, and others have quite a bit of misinformation in them.

Once I get the ok to talk a bit more, I will, and it will hopefully clear things up a bit.

Who doesn't understand that fact! Thanks professor! :rolleyes
It's still sucks when a cool bar goes down.
Especially one that shows MotoGP races.

Hey Valgar I know your connection, please fill us in on this when you can, I love the Ace Cafe and honestly have taken the Kink tours when they were on the first wednesday of the month back then, everybody was cool there, sooo I really didnt have anything against it until I read what I read...It jus makes me sad, honestly.

what I did in the begining of that thread was copy and paste the FB posts I read this morning...

The details of this fucked up situation are a bit complicated, and in the end won't change the outcome. Now that the cat's out of the bag, I'm sure Rob will quickly get tired of explaining how it happened and talking about what he should do next, or how he could fight this.

The best thing to do is to go there and enjoy the place for what it is as long as it's still around.

Agreed.
I've been meaning to go for years, as I was a die-hard devotee of the old SF Ace Cafe that was next to the Holy Cow on Folsom, back in the 90's. I was very pleasantly surprised when I returned to SF and found that a new Ace had sprung up, and had a devoted set of patrons.

The fact that it is closing has gotten me off my ass to stop in and have a pint. They not only have one of my favorite beers on tap, but they have at LEAST two. Their fish and chips are quite excellent, in a non traditional manner.

I suggest that everyone that HASN'T been by the Ace, go now. Throw as much money at this establishment as you can, which will hopefully help them negotiate the costs and down time of relocating.
It would honestly be a shame if they aren't able to reopen elsewhere.

I'm going to try to frequent the Ace as much as I can from now until closing.
See y'all there.
