Tygaboy's Carbon Fiber How-To Seminar

Here is my exhaust hanger. Thanks Chris, and to everyone that was there it was nice to meet you all. Unfortunately on my hanger the carbon didn't lay flat againt the mold, giving it a bubble in the top layer. Oh well, guess i'll just have to try again.

Sorry to hear about the bubble, but like we were discussing, try and determine why it happened.
Did you move the material around too much when you were laying it up and that caused the 'bridge' you got?
Let me tell you, my first part looked like crap - WAAAAAY worse that what you've got here. So no crying!! Learning from the experience was what this event was supposed to be about.
I love your closing comment:
"Oh well, guess I'll just have to try again."
That's the attitude! Remember, if it was totally simple to get a great result every time, it wouldn't be half as satisfying when you do get the killer part. Give it another go and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, very informative and makes me one to make something now !!

Would you mind if you can make a materials, tools and how to for the people that couldnt make it up there.
The picture does help on what its like but really would be helpful with a step by step, even better a video would be great but im asking tooooooo much.

Well I popped my hanger out of it's mold as soon as I got home. It looked so super sexy nice! (can't find the words). I started triming and drilling my holes. I just don't know what shape I want. I was going to go for more of a sharp look that would go with the lines of the bike. But I think I'm going to just round off all the corrners. O well.
Here is a pic (sorry it's taken by my phone) Of what I have right now. I'll cut and shape it tomorrow after school.
Thanks again Chris. Vacuum bagging is next.

first of all, thank you chris! my boots love their new heat shield :toothless

i'd also like to see what everyone else turned out esp the fiberglass hanger (the silver stuff, and im sorry i forgot your name) we all had a great day and thank chris for use of his time, space, material, and expertise.

Two things.
First, I see I'm not the only one who has a problem with 'early release':blush ...From the mold, I mean!
:laughing

Second, GREAT news to hear you got a nice result from your first effort. Way to go!
In terms of the design you want, just use a Sharpie or even masking tape to lay out various patterns. Sharpie wipes off with Acetone and maybe other stuff. But this will give you a chance to see what you like before you commit.
Remember that this part does need to support the exhaust can so don't go too crazy - leave plenty of material.
Again, congrats!

I popped it out of the mold Sunday morning and it came out awesome! I trimmed it to an approximate shape (though it was just a practice part) with regular scissors. I still need to sand it to the exact shape.

Chris, you did an awesome job in getting the information across. I'm already getting together the stuff I need for basic parts.

The bubble was from the first layer of carbon not sitting against the mold. Next time i'll get it right. Thanks again Chris!

Got it. Thanks for the updated pic - much easier to see what you're talking about.
So, you can see that since the void is on an outside corner of the part, it was a problem with the inside corner in the layup. This is what's called a 'bridge' - the material straightened itself out a little, tried to flatten itself out and 'bridged' across that inside corner of the mold, creating this void. A very common issue with wet lay up.
And remember what we talked about:
If we had let the first layer of epoxy get tacky and form an initial gel coat, when we pressed the first layer into it, the material would have formed perfectly to the mold and avoided the possibility of bridging.
One way to help combat this is to ''bend" the material a little before you lay it up - kind of like you were going to put a crease into it that would fit right in the corner. Be careful not to actually crease it or disturb the weave of the fabric. We did this on one of the lay ups and it made a noticible difference.

I still haven't cut my hanger. Ones I do I will post more pics. It has a little pooling on the back side. No bridging for me tho, guess i got lucky.
MackeyStingray do you have any more cool pics? I don't know how you did it but the picture of the 2 sv's looks really good (my bike was so dirty but you can't tell in the picture.) There is still one more hanger out there, I want to see what it looks like!!

those 2 SVs and only those SVs are ugly :teeth :later :laughing hmmm.... how long till I<3Twins and fungshui to respond? 3....2....1...:p

Hey, Bassius, I don't know how to tell you this, but your subframe is showing. This is a family place so if you either just put that away or leave, that's be great.
