Cosplay starring in an apparent moral dilemma.

I'm glad that you brought up the Klingons, because that is a 1960's implicit example of racism, IMO. Linking thoughtlessly violent base impulses, to a barbaric "alien" race, that just happens to look like "black" people, always struck me as fucked up, especially for a show that was considered progressive for the time.
There were light-skinned alien bad guys, too--notably the Romulans. And Star Fleet had both black and white officers.

If you hear the dog whistle, you're the dog.

People are idiots.

This.

Also, all stereotypes are hilarious, pejorative slurs should always be used as terms of endearment, and anyone who is sensitive about this shit needs to just watch the Barbershop scene in Gran Torino over and over until they understand how to behave.

sorry cosplay color isn't about skin, anybody can be anybody, but thanks for the chance to post images of SailorMoon.

No. We’re just making fun of nonchalant idiots that like to be offended on other people’s behalf.

FWIW I don't think in this particular instance she was trying to be racist, but at the same time cosplay doesn't demand you blackface to play a black character, just like how black people don't have to whiteface to play Batman.

If the costume's good you don't need to paint up your skin for con-goers to know who you are.

Somewhat yes, mostly no. Strictly speaking, she is a white person playing a black character, but I don't think that she had any of the malice that normally comes with blackface and seems to be done out of a genuine love for that specific character. The thing is, there are a lot of people who are not going to make that distinction, they have blogs and write articles on sites like Kotaku.

Basically what I'm saying is that while something like this probably shouldn't be so controversial, it is controversial. With that in mind I can understand why a con would say that they don't want to turn their whole event into litigating whether or not that cosplay is acceptable.

And this is the rub. Yes she is white but that character isn’t black in the world he is from. As a matter of fact race isn’t even a thing in that realm. You judge it with your own eyes based on current events and determine it to be wrong. This has nothing to do with black face at all. It’s really silly and huge stretch at best.

Like mentioned before let’s start banning Klingons now.

This is science fiction. It’s fake for the love of god.

I haven't determined it to be wrong at all. I don't think she did anything wrong in choosing to cosplay that character, because it's very clear that she chose out of love for the character and not some malicious feeling towards black people. I don't think the con was wrong in being skittish about something that could cause a controversy, because even though it is silly and not at all the cosplayers intent, some people likely would get offended. Neither party is in the wrong in this case.
