Finding the best mattress...what say you BARF?

Bought Tempurpedics for the last twelve years (two moves and an upgrade in size). Just switched to sleep number as my SO and I like two completely different levels of firmness to sleep well. Just a mattress on platform bed, non adjustable base. Got it on sale at 50% off and no more back pain in the morning!!

Sleep number is overpriced garbage IME. Worst $3k I ever spent

I got a king Tempurpedic. It was great the first year or so. Now it's way too soft, sinks in too much and yes, it's hot.

If you want a memory foam type mattress, just get something like the purple or whatever $800 bed, and replace it every 3-4 years with a fresh one.

"best" means something different to each one of us

some of the posts above refer to a good value; some describe the characteristics of a bed that meet our personal criteria regardless of price

"best" to me means the best bed i've ever slept on, which are the pillow top beds at resort hotels. if i were going to buy the next bed, i would call the hotel where i had the best comfortable night sleep and buy it on sale during one of the major holidays.

no complaints with the Beautyrest we got in 2014

TL;DR
I did a lot of mattress research years ago and went with a 100% latex foam mattress because it was inexpensive, said to last longer and was drop shipped in smaller box compressed. Some assembly required.

I forget the brand, but I found it super comfortable. You can order the firmness and make one side different than the other. If I take off all the bedding, I can smell the foam, but I dont notice this at other times. That is the negative.

Yeah, but I hear they make those in Vietnam from recycled materials.

My best is comfort and price. :x. :)

i’m an ortho nightmare. due to horse riding and moto accidents, have been through multiple major surgeries (1 hip, 2 shoulder, and spine - broken neck / 2 vertebrae). as a result, there was a time i never thought i would be able to sleep through the night pain free. for me it was tempurpedic. totally magical pain relief. have slept like a baby ever since buying one.

I very eco and I like recycled material. That explains the aroma. :laughing

We got the "Select" 20 years ago and it was $1400, now $2100. Not sure what you got for $400.

I'm saying I probably did not get a Flo-Bed. Sorry, not clear.

I looked at my mattress and I can not find any branding on it. The cover only says 'Organic Cotton" and the tag says made with used prophylactics by "Natural Latex Beds, Charleston, SC"

What is a prophylactic?

Joking aside, I searched the manufacture and could not find an inexpensive option. So, maybe now that Latex is in, the prices have gone up. One thing I learned is that with latex you dont need as thick as a mattress, so you may save some money by going a little thinner.

The mattress that airstream provided me was a light cheap memory foam that I sank thru. It wasn't 6 months before it acquired a divot where I slept. Due to the shape and style I couldn't flip or spin it to avoid wear.
So, six years later, , ,

I went with something way firmer, a 7" latex from Rocky Mountain mattresses, no memory foam or topper at all, with this shape I can spin, but not flip. Going on second year, hasn't sunk me yet, sleeping like a dead man.
Heavy as hell, vacuum packed, UPS shipped.

I had a TempurPedic for many years. Like others have said, starts off nice. Then, after a few years, you sink in and it is HOT.

Since then, I have been a Keetsa fan.

Great mattresses, reasonable prices, local company.

Any recommendations on a medium-soft mattress? Just looking for something around a 4-5/10 on softness, for mostly a side-sleeper.
I was set on a memory foam mattress, possibly a hybrid memory foam.

I went to Casper, Purple and Sleep Number and tried the beds. Casper's premium bed was ok but kind of firm, Purple's bed with the 3" topper was pretty good, and Sleep Number was pretty good but not worth $5,000.

Also on my radar was Tuft and Needle, and Layla. T&N is out because of firmness, but Layla seems interesting, and is rated a tad under medium in firmness. Unfortunately I don't see a place to test in person.

I thought I could pick easy after testing the mattresses, but now I'm at a standstill. I might just order a mattress and return it every 100 days until I've tested them all. Then I'll re-buy the one I like best.....

Have you previously used this type of mattress? One negative thing I can say I have experienced with these types of soft foam mattresses is they make certain OTHER activities much more difficult.

Nope just used the standard Costco mattresses and my girlfriend’s no-name memory foam bed. Her bed gives me way less back pain even though it feels kind of firm.

Straw works for me.
