Why am I watching the Johnny Depp trial

Is it bad that I just looked at this as more celebrity entertainment/drama and not really caring who wins?

No, that's what it is.

This whole case, really, was about the court of public opinion, the actual court decision is secondary. The level of attacks on Heard I've seen on twitter and YouTube and the like seems insanely excessive.

Well that's a bit of a cop out, isn't it.

Anyway, if you want a direct Disney connection, Disney worked with Depp on the Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies for years, and his drug use was a well known factor throughout.

Isn't it really common, to the point that it's basically a meme, that Disney child stars end up fucked up and strung out on drugs? Like, I can't think of a star from their pipeline that turned out completely normal...

It's not a cop out, and I was referring to Pirates. Word is that he was so fucked up during 4-5 that he was impossible to work with. My point was I think Disney had already said they were done with him prior to this mess.

As for child stars, I would agree, but it's not really exclusive to Disney. Just being a child star in general.

Obviously false claims of physical and sexual abuse can have a seriously bad outcome for the innocent victim. She deserves at least as bad an outcome for making the false claims.

I saw it largely as two very hurt people doing very hurtful things to each other. I didn't have the stomach for any of it. My cup for bad news already runneth over.

Like a reality show version of "The War of the Roses" movie...

His lawyers were WAAAAAAAAYYYYY better than hers, though....

I don't really get the argument though. Disney knew about Depps drugs problems interfering on set during Pirates 4 (released in 2011) so they.... scheduled him for pirates 5. They knew about his drug problems causing issues on set during Pirates 5, so they.... initially scheduled him for pirates 6, until a few days after Heards allegations.

Disney basically accepts that dealing with drug problems is basically the cost of doing business with some stars. However, they will blacklist people in an instant for bad press. A lot of Hollywood works basically the same way.

This is probably case by case. If the actor keeps no-showing or causing other expensive issues, it'll come down to a risk/reward calculation. In particular, if they have any reason to think the actors behavior puts finishing the film at risk, they're not going to use him.

They may well have been steering clear of his bad press. Hiring an alleged wife beater isn't a good look.

The only thing I know about this case is what I've seen in memes. Also discussions on nerd Twitter about what's going with her role in Aquaman 2 because of all of this.

Oh, 100%, there are bean counters doing a cost/benefit for all of these things. Prior to the very public wife beating allegations, Depp, on his own, could make a movie successful, just by his name being on the posters. It didn't really matter if his performance was pretty bad, nor did it really matter if the script was shit, nor does it matter that he was annoying as hell to work with. His name on a big budget film made that film more successful, generating millions more box office revenue for studios. He could get away with being an annoying, drugged out diva. Drug problems are also common enough in Hollywood that you aren't going to get millions of people boycotting because a star actor has a drug problem.

The bad press from working with an alleged wife beater, especially since the allegations were widely believed publicly, is a very different prospect. At that point, no question he is a liability not just on set but in box office returns, and probably not just for movies he is directly involved with.

All that said, moving forward, who knows. Both Depp and Heard have had their names dragged through the mud, neither comes out of this looking particularly good. Hollywood broadly, especially Disney, might just decide it's not worth it to work with either or both of them.

He's already got an independent film in the works about France's Louis XV and his mistress... :dunno

There's a point when most actors should move on to different roles, but they often don't see it til it's too late... generally when the love interest in the film is the same age as their grand daughter... :laughing

I'm not understanding why this particular case was so popular. Celebrities, yeah, I know. But celebrities with legal/court drama seems to be a pretty normal thing, no?

Why them?

My gut, which is subject to making questionable decisions, tells me that it gave folks the opportunity to explore a real life story that men can also be victims of abuse. There's also backlash against the #metoo movement, as well as the "listen to women" argument.

There's a literal army of twitter bots in support of Johnny Depp through this whole ordeal. Wouldn't surprise me if a good percentage of those were managed by incels / MRAs and other chuds of the internet.

well she did apparently defecate. *

and she's like super blonde and beautiful.

I can't say she has consistency in who she's dating, e.g. exclusively women:

HUH but then "suddenly" a billionaire .. like Elon Melon or whatever.

*but, if you claim you've watched all other celebs and they usually defecate and get sued hey... whatever rocks your storytelling boat. :laughing

That's fair. Hadn't considered that angle. Thanks.

Well, it seemed to already be a huge hot topic before it came to light that she shit the bed, figuratively and literally.

So regardless of what you think, Amber Heard is screwed financially. She has two projects according to IMDB in pre-production / post production but I'm guessing they are not multi-million dollar payouts...she can't appeal UNTIL she pays the court settlement. She doesn't have the money, and it can't be discarded via bankruptcy proceedings for some reason.

Vaush with some good takes in this. Plus, tim pool is an idiot content.
