Just starting this thread because I want to see everyone’s pictures and make sure this story gets shared! This is the second annual extravaganza but my first time on the ride.

Eleven barfers met up at Norcalsplowpokes place in Sac and rode up to Sierra City on back roads and dirt roads and much fun was had. The proper bike for this ride was a dual sport but we had a mix of big bmw’s, one air cooled, an fz1 that railed the dirt like a champ, a couple Kim adventures, a t7 and a pair of klr’s. Awesome route complements of Norcalslowpoke.

Pics to follow hopefully.

here’s a few of my pics from today … big thanks to Mr Norcalslowpoke!

technically, this is the third BARF Norcalslowpoke Extravaganza … did the first two on my ‘85 Super Glide and ‘88 K75s … if I ride my ‘73 Tiger next year, I’ll have exhausted the quiver … :laughing

Looks fun. Looks like the FZ1 makes a pretty good ADV bike!

Dude… looks like Scott delivered on another great adventure! Wish I could have joined you folks, I’ll have an appropriate bike next fall. And fishing…. Seems to be a number of recaps including fishing recently, it’s inspiring me. We may have to organize moto fishing event with Eric B, SFMCJOHN John, and Motoryder John.

Enjoying the pics!

Sorry for being late to the thread I started, but I had some work to catch up on after this ride!

Epic routes and fun people always make for an awesome weekend on two wheels!

On day one, I got into with a rather large mud puddle about two thirds of the way through Buckeye Rd. I was out in front on the 950 ADV clipping along at a decent pace. I tried to go around the edge of the puddle which had about 10" of width above water, but ran out of talent and lost the front end when a fallen tree branch cut the 10" to about the width of my front tire near the end of the puddle (more of a pond actually :laughing. I made the mistake of deciding to wear "street gear" which consisted of work boots, shorts, t-shirt all under my stich. I've never crashed the 950 before and somehow my left foot got smashed under the left side passenger peg. I thought I may have broken my foot at first and it took me several minutes to even get up. The group caught up by that time but I was miserable enough that no one seems to have taken a picture of the crash scene unfortunately. After 20 minutes or so I was feeling ok enough to continue on but I took it down a notch as I couldn't put much weight on that foot the rest of the day. Note to self, if riding the 950 off road, wear motocross boots.

We got to our fabulous "resort" as the sun was going down. The place was great. Its called Sierra Pines Resort in fabulous Sierra City. They've got a restaurant, bar, outside seating with a fish pond and "rustic" accommodations that I thought were all great. Its also right on a small river that you can walk down to and you can hear it from the rooms which was nice.

Derek had twisted his ankle the week before so we were both hobbling around by the time we got to the "resort".

My bike after its first crash. Could have been much worse and I technically made it past the puddle before "I had to lay her down" so its not that muddy. :laughing

The next day we did another great route that was about 1.5 hours too long for my foot. We went from Sierra City over towards Graeagle, and then to some other small towns that I forget and ultimately to Oroville and then back up the hill toward Quincy and back to the hotel. I think the consensus was to cut Oroville out of the ride next year and stay in the mountains. But it was another great day of riding. It was all pavement as I remember and several folks switched bikes. I got a turn on the fz1 which after riding the 950 felt like riding a scalpel. Windsor was the man for taking that thing offroad! I didn't get any pics this day.

Day 3 was scheduled to be a "day by a lake" with an optional hike. My foot was not going for a hike. It looked like this on day 3

So anytwowilldo and I decided to do our own ride and headed off to do a loop around Lake Davis. Someone mentioned a fire lookout so we hoped to find that too, which we did luckily!

Heading out for day 3, anytwowilldo and EricB with SFMCJohn

As far up the mountain to the look out as you can ride. If you know me and are wondering WTF is up with my hair, its because I dyed it to match Mrs1962's hair for burningman a few weeks ago. It will get chopped off soon.

Awesome little look out tower is awesome. There was a nice young woman, womaning the tower. She was seeing smoke off in the distance so was on the radio directing people to what she was seeing, but she invited us up to take in the views. :thumbup. It was pretty amazing that we found it because we didn't have gps and were navigating by a cell picture of the AAA map that EricB had at the "resort". The road up to the tower was all dirt, but no problem on the big bikes even with a hurt foot.

After the tower we continued on the dirt road north past Lake Davis. It went through a burned out valley that looked like it got seriously roasted by fire and ended up in a dinky little place called Genesee. From there we headed back toward Quincy and had plans to meet the others at a brewery in Blairsden around 4pm-ish. The brewery produces tasty brews and there was a food truck that put out some delish tacos and other fried fish foods. After that we headed back over the hill from Blairsden to Sierra City and Norcalslowpoke took us on a little dirt side track which was super fun. He's got some great routes in this area.

The next morning we all packed up and headed down the mountain. I didn't get any pics or video but this was a ride I seriously wish I had a gopro strapped to my bike. Hwy 49 is always a fun twisty ride. I was sweeping on this leg of the ride and anytwowilldo was about 1 second ahead of me. We were clipping along at a nice easy pace and as we rounded a corner this large brown bear came loping up from the river, climbed over the guard rail and jumped right between anytwowilldo's back tire and my front. We had helmet comms going between us and he just saw the bear out of the corner of his eye, when I started yelling, "Holy shit there's a big ass bear!" or something like that. I hit the brakes and missed the bear as she flew across the road and up the hill. I've seen bears before but this was as close as I've ever been to one. Pretty amazing how fast they are and how their bodies move! She was like a big blubbery skin bag, hauling the mail up over and across Hwy 49!

From there we ended up in Downieville and rode up some steep dirt road which I lost my rear brakes on coming down a few years back, and on more dirt back towards Auburn, where the group all split up. Super fun weekend and many thanks to Norcalslowpoke for getting us all together for a great weekend!

It’s really a fun place to stay. Moto friendly with the exception on one old lady guest who we will call “Karen”. She gave me the stink eye when I was airing up the third morning. And she gave it to Tom as he was warming up his bike too.

Side note: I was seriously lazy before this trip as noted by my lack of proper gear and I also didn’t check my tire pressure. Now on the front of the 950 I’m running a proper non dot dirt knobby. It’s a Sedona something or other I bought for my 350 but it’s seriously the stiffest front dirt tire I’ve ever seen so decided to run it on the 950. I also run a tube saddle to avoid pinch flats. Look it up if you aren’t familiar. Anyway when I finally got around to checking my tire pressure I had 10psi in the front and 20psi in the back. Way lower than my normal pressures but that Sedona and tube saddle combo rocks for big bike dirt. No pinch flats and hooked up great except for in the owl shit/oil slick mud bog and the tire felt similar to anytwowilldos 35psi front tire before I inflated to 18 psi for the rest of the trip. :thumbup

The resort looks awesome... the foot... not so much. Ouch!

Tom making friends on his bike at motels again! :rofl

Great report Daniel. :thumbup

:rofl

Yeah we needed you to help keep the peace man. Hope you’re on the next ride!

A bunch of great pictures so far.
