I just bought a PS5 and I need help.

Yes, I'm 63 y/o and I bought a PS5 last week. I bought the 1Tb 'disk' version. I really want to play Call of Duty, but I am getting stuck at the very beginning. I signed into my Playstation account. I signed in to my Activision account, but now it is telling me purchase add on's in order to play the game!!! I just purchased the disks, so I confused as to why it will not simply load and allow me to play???

Any suggestions?
 
It's been so long since I've used a gaming console but usually the game so work out of the box but might limit you in how you can play unless you are network connected. If you're trying to play online I guess you might have to be one the same add ons that others are running but, I dunno much 🤷‍♂️
 
Even though you bought the physical disc, modern Call of Duty games use a unified launcher hub called "Call of Duty HQ". The disc essentially acts as a "key" to download this main hub, but the actual game modes (Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies) are treated as separate, modular "add-ons" or DLC packs that must be downloaded individually.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown you can share to help them get past that screen:

Step 1: Manage Game Content​

Instead of launching the game and getting stuck in the in-game menus, they need to prompt the PS5 to download the missing pieces from the console dashboard.

  1. Go to the PS5 Home Screen and hover over the Call of Duty game icon.
  2. Press the Options button on the PS5 controller (the small button to the right of the touchpad with three horizontal lines).
  3. Select Manage Game Content from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Download the Missing Packs​

A list of all the modular components for the game will appear.

  • They will see packs labeled Campaign, Multiplayer, or Co-Op/Zombies.
  • Next to the modes they want to play, they will likely see a Download icon (an arrow pointing down).
  • Click the download icon for the desired packs. They are completely free because the PS5 detects the disc is in the drive.

Step 3: Wait for the Downloads to Finish​

Because these packs are massive, it will take some time to download depending on their internet speed.

  • They can check the progress by pressing the PS button on the controller once and selecting the Downloads/Uploads icon (the arrow pointing up at the bottom of the screen).

  • Keep the Disc In: even after everything downloads, the physical disc must remain in the PS5 console whenever they want to play. It acts as their license key.
  • Watch out for "PlayStation Plus": If they are trying to play Multiplayer online against other people, the game might also prompt them to buy a subscription to PlayStation Plus (Sony's paid service for online matchmaking). However, they can play the single-player Campaign entirely for free without any extra subscriptions once the pack is downloaded.

I’m not a gamer but sheesh, why does it have to be so complicated?
Should be able to just pop in the disc and play.
I guess those days are long gone.

Modern games are MASSIVE. Much larger than will fit on a disc, which is why the content must be downloaded. The disc is basically your "proof of purchase"

This and also they want to be able to modify/update as they see fit so you will always have to download the latest update unless you want to play single player campaign offline.

I will happy to play single player offline. When I go online, I'm just going to be killed by some 8 y/o kid after 5 seconds.

Your advice worked. I'm still not able to play some games (I bought 3 CoD games), but I was able to shoot Zombies on one of the games. I could not connect to the CoD network (for Multiplayer),, which is odd, because i was connected well enough to download the updates??? Also, it will not allow me to play offline because I have not purchased the "Campaign Packs". What a bunch of jerks- you pay XX amount of money for the game (disk), but they squeeze more $$$ from you to be able to use the disk, that you already purchased.

Downloaded for a fee I’m sure. And it doesn’t stop with updates and add-on’s I’ll bet.
What a racket.
The last game I played was Tetris many years ago.
 
For those interested...you can build a Retropie machine to play vintage games. Did this during COVID. Got a CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB RAM with 32GB micro SD).

It's not that difficult to get it all setup.
 
If I can suggest- try out Red Dead Redemption II. The beginning is a tutorial- it moves intentionally slow-ish in the first chapter- but once you've learned to run-and-gun the map opens up and you can explore freely. I spend a lot of time hunting and fishing in that game. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time.

My boy loves that game. Especially when you get to smoke the clansmen with extreme prejudice.

Fortunately it's not much of an issue on console. IDK if call of duty has cross-play, but you can just turn it off.
 
It does. Good point on console not having the hackers...that I did not know. PC is a cesspool.
 
Anti-cheat on PC is only marginally effective. So many people using aim bots, esp, etc. And openly streaming while using cheats
