It makes my brain break that most people don't know a women in the 70's needed her husband to co sign for a credit card or bank account.
It is indeed mind boggling.

Women in the United States could independently obtain a mortgage in their own name without a male co-signer after the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) in 1974.

Not that Gloria was directly responsible but no-fault was not legall until 1969, and only then in California. If a woman was in an abusive relationship many states required that the abuse be witness by an officer of the law, the ER visit was not enough cause for a divorce.

Silent Gen/Boomers WASP males were/are very controlling?
The patriarchy is a real thing. The generations you referenced grew up with it as "normal." It took brave women Like Mrs. Gloria* demanding to be treated as whole people for any of it to change.

*shout out to those who prefer a title as a sign of respect.

Every woman who has a bank account or credit card in their own name can thank Ms Steinem.

It was Congresswomen Bella Abzug, Margaret Heckler, Emily Card and Senator William Brock that are credited for authoring and enactment of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974.

How was Gloria Steinem involved in passing that law?
