I received an e-mail invite to this event. The locals are upset that people are using the roads like a race track. In recent weeks I've seen an increasing number of signs clustered in one particular area along 84 making such statements. So, a town hall has been called. I was hoping to attend in person but, alas, work commitments mean I'll have to attend the live stream instead.

What I want to know is whether the issues are perceived or real; are new residents in the area just experiencing how popular the hills are for recreational road users. For a large proportion of us on BARF, we know that 35 and 84 are popular destinations for a wide range of road users, they always have been. There have been a number of high-profile incidents over the last year. But, how do these compare to previous years? What are the stats! I'm very curious to know what 'solutions' will be proposed. There has been chat on the socials about installing speed cameras.

Personally, as a frequent rider of Hwys 35 and 84 and the surrounding roads, the biggest threats are people dawdling, incompetent passing, passing in blind corners, and, for Hwy 35, the dangerous state of the road surface.

Hopefully these links will work for those who want to chime in...

I will jump into the live stream for sure.
The action has always been lower the speed limit and or more enforcement.

I am old enough to remember when they were 55 by default.

Didn't this sign used to say End 50 MPH?

Nobody’s getting a helicopter ride because of people dawdling or irregular road surfaces.

Maybe. Maybe not. But, there's an explicit law for dawdlers: California Vehicle Code § 21656. As for irregular road surfaces, they have the potential to kill. The cyclist who died up on skyline was killed when a car failed to negotiate a corner. Was speed a factor. Highly probable. But the only factor? I doubt it. I'm very familiar with the corner where the fatality occurred as I pass through there very frequently. It has limited traction. I rode through there after the incident and the road markings look like those where a vehicle lost traction. Not a TAI. However, the road surface very likely played a role along with the incompetence of the driver.

I don't know how often you ride Skyline but the poor road surface has been a bone of contention in recent years. I don't mind because it's part of riding. Inexperienced riders might not fair so well. Where I do draw the line is when irregular surfaces are so severe they damage equipment. I'm sure everyone can get behind preventing unnecessary repairs.

I am going to go sit in on the meeting instead of doing the stream thing.
I certainly appreciate you being there. Bummed I can't make it myself

I think you’re ignoring the elephant in the room. S-P-E-E D. The locals know it. You know it. I know it.

How many times have I been up on Skyline and come across dawdling people? A thousand. How many times have I had an accident as a result? Zero. How many times have I come across a lousy road surface? Well, I think you get the picture.

If you go to that neighborhood meeting and blame the accidents on dawdlers, road surface, etc. without copping to the speed issue I think you’re going to be frustrated with the result.

It is more than Speed but that is the largest factor.
Dawdlers create situations because of impatient Drivers or riders.

An impatient car trying to pass can kill for sure so don’t sell their impact as nothing.

I had one come to a complete stop in a blind corner and wave me by. I could not see shit but neither could the truck coming soon to kill me.
After a minute of yelling and waving I crept up and hit it and hoped.

And guess the fuck what. A Sheriff saw it and gave me a ticket for a double yellow pass. :facepalm

This is just rumors that customer of mine heard that blew my mind:
The owners of Alice's are receiving threats from the county of closing down the access to their parking lot if " improvement " is not made.
I don't know how they could even do this on either side!

Maybe the parking free for all is creating safety issues??

Time to coral them animals!

What is it about some people that they have utterly zero realization that they are sitting in the middle of a blind corner?

Not as bad as your situation but I was riding my bike and a group of 4 people stopped across the path exactly in the worst spot of a blind corner on the outside part when I was making the left turn, forcing me to make a very risky path on the left side of this corner. I've had 6 close calls on this corner due to utterly clueless people over the years I've ridden there.

Some people must just have no concept of what makes something a blind corner, they have a completely different awareness that anybody with any shred of situational awareness would have.

Thank you for attending this meeting, Budman! What was learned from this evening's event?
