Stepping up to the Big Leagues (new helmet)

darkhelmet.jpg

miran did you figure the sizing with their conversion chart? or just measure? work well enough?

That looks close enough to a German M40 helmet. I'm in! :laughing

In helmet news, I rode back from Lincoln this morning, and that internal visor was pretty useful. It's a bit too light for direct sunlight, but not light enough that you feel like there's too much glare and have to squint. I really liked having a clear view to my mirrors ("Is that a cop?") and instruments. :cool I'm happy with my purchase, but I'd probably be just as happy if it was a German gun with the barrel backwards that cost too much money :p

As far as weight goes, I have a gigantic head that weighs 34248234534lbs anyway. This helmet is tagged at 1650g or so, which is like 3.6 or 3.7 lbs. A size XL Shoei X11 ($580) is 1627g and an Arai Quantum II is 1624g ($560-660)

In reference to your title, I was gonna say, anything associated with your head is The Big Leagues. :party

Do the vents close?

The center top one does, as does the chin vent. But even when it's closed, the chin vent circulates a small amount of air right up your nose/mouth. It's enough to breathe fresh air, but not enough to reach your eyes. I really like the barely-cracked-open feature on the visor, too.

Does it feel as heavy as it actually weighs? How is the clarity of the sunvisor?? Inquiring minds need to know!

Well, it's like 60g heavier than a comparable Shoei or Arai, which is like 3% difference. It's really not that heavy to me.

The visor, like I said, could be darker, but it's not light enough to be useless. I really liked riding with it, though it was mostly overcast this morning. The clarity is different from my Scorpion, that's for sure. It looks somewhat smoky instead of just dark. I don't know if it's a tint thing or a clarity thing. If you flip it on at night, it just looks like you're driving through fog.

Cool man, I'm glad you enjoy the new bucket! Thanks for all the good info too! :thumbup

as far as weight goes:
Quoting the WebBikeWorld review:
"It's also very heavy at 1789 grams (3 lbs., 15-1/8 oz.). At just shy of 4 pounds, this is the heaviest helmet we've reviewed to date..."

What were they measuring, wet weight? :laughing

I guess Schuberth's scale is off by 109 grams

maybe the schuberth sticker is for a different size?
and they just put it on all their helmets?

I know Scuderia has a list of actual-weighed helmets in their store, all size medium, and seem to remember those numbers not matching up to the published weights of the helmets in question.

I doubt they'd put the wrong sticker on a $700 helmet. And if anything, for the same size shell, an XL will be lighter than an M, because there's less padding for big heads.

I guess we'll have to bust out a scale and see what's what, because other reviews list it at 1500g (3.3) to 1700? (3lb 13.8oz). Or we can assume that webBike uses the same scale for all of them and their numbers relative to each other are accurate.

Awesome deal on a SWEET helmet... As long as you're happy with it and your neck doesn't bother after your long rides, you made out big time!!! Congrats:thumbup
