Has anyone ever taken Fencing lessons?

I was the #2 man in NV in epee in college. Unfortunately, epee don't get you chicks. But, those were fun tournaments. I just hated the fuckers who would charge you or whip you with the epee. Never did kendo or sabre but, always wanted to.

I had to look up epee Paul and Westie. Aren't you supposed to charge westie? Sword fighting doesn't get you chicks? That is a cool thing to learn. At least two girls in this thread dig it. You just weren't looking in the right places, no? :) I think I am going to take lessons at the jc here, thanks to the advice of the ladies here. I've got to figure out where to buy gear! How much fun is this going to be!!

I was in Nevada. Mmmk? No chicks. But no, I was more of the duel 1-5-7 target body parts/defend kinda guy. Charging in for the touch was shallow, I thought.

Epee is the only fencing sport where the whole body is a target, and not subject to the arcane, but very logical and beautiful "right of way" rules.
Epee fencers are often tall lanky guys who can thread a moving needle. They also eat their boogers and re-use dental floss, this was right up my alley. I took 3rd in the Rocky Mountain Sectionals in 197-, uh never mind. I won the Kansas City Invitational the same year. But the good fencers were mostly on the East Coast and Bay Area, even then.

Ain't this like one of the best sword fights ever filmed for the silver screen?

(And yes, Basil Rathbone was a fencer.)

Masameet:mag:love:love:love, thanks so much. I loved the fencing like I love the Motociclectas now. Gene Kelly was undoubtedly the best fencer to ever act, the man's footwork was uncanny. And screen fencing, while requiring skill, is ALWAYS done too close. A real swordsman could easily, should we say, spill the wine?, from an 8ft distance.

Gene Kelly ... as in "The Three Musketeers"?

I think I saw that movie. I guess I'll have to borrow/rent it.

His footwork would of course have been outstanding. I forget who was the fencing teacher to the stars. He taught them all.

Did you ever do a flèche?

I know someone who said that was his signature move when he was in college (but he's so fat now it's kinda hard to believe he was a fencer at one time).

(Oh, and I'm not much of a fencer at all. Just a romantic with a notion for sword play.)

Masameet!! That was the best video ever!! I so want to learn!

mais oui, cherie, ma Fleche was famous, forwards perhaps less than backwards. The balestra wasnt bad, either. Still, for an epee fencer, coupe d'arret FTW.

Aldo Nadi ?

The fleche is pretty much every epeeists move, its pretty common. I prefer wrist touches however, and doing a fleche to the wrist is kinda tough :D ...but not impossible :twofinger

Here's another good movie fencing scene. They keep the action tight and the tempo up, and all the names they mention were real fencing masters; Capo Ferro, Agrippa, Bonetti.

Cary Elwes was so beautiful in that movie. :)

I'd heard that left-handed fencers tended to have an advantage over right-handed fencers -- as in straight shots to the chest area? Just had to bang the opponent's right hand out of the way.

Lefties have the advantage of being rare, so a righty doesn't have as much of a game prepared to use on a lefty, while lefties fight versus righties all the time and have a nice bag of tricks.
However a lefty on lefty battle is even more rare, and generally results in a confused and clumsy bout, and all the righties laugh and laugh :laughing

So I should train left handed? I can do that I think. I ride surf and snow board goofy. :thumbup

Masameet, great link! So awesome!
I have a friend up here in SF who takes fencing; she took it up as a cool midlife hobby. Her thighs are like IRON, and it's great to see the grin on her face. It makes me want to go to one of her classes and watch.
YUM!
If you do start, post pics.

:laughing I don't think so!! :laughing I wouldn't want to scare people!:laughing But it is a nice side benefit to find out my thighs will feel like iron :thumbup Where did your friend buy her gear?

Yup, be prepared to develop epic quads. :rofl :thumbup

Darlene!

Aren't these the niftiest of photos!

(I can't watch the videos (plus tons more pix!), as they require Intel Macs. But if you can, enjoy!)

Masa! Thank you for sharing. Your guy is soooo lucky to have you! :love

Those pics are awesome! I want to learn! My hubby thinks it is a waste of time. But I think it would be something I could get into. It looks like so much fun and I think it might help my "klutz" problem :laughing It looks high energy and I need that. What was the hardest thing for you to deal with while you were in it?
