Congratulations Oakland- 100 homicides and it's only mid September!

Your neighborhood looks safe during the daytime, Ernie. :)

The guy got shot 100 feet away in the daytime, a couple months ago. But we like it. I walk the streets day or night.

I've lived in West Oakland (AKA "da Lower Bottom") for 12 years, alone for 7 of 'em. I feel pretty safe in my neighborhood, and most of my neighbors like me and look out for me. (For years I was the token white person in the neighborhood, so everybody knows me. And besides, they decided my ex-wife and I were entertainingly/scarily crazy when we had a bullwhip "fight" in the middle of the street the first summer we lived here.)
I do have bars on my windows, a big dog, and, of course, a small, personal-sized arsenal, but geez, I'm a woman who lives alone-- I'd want that in any city! Wouldn't anyone? Oakland's not too bad.

maybe he is more east/south than i'm thinking, cuz sounded like to me i was picturing somewhere off of park steet, on the good side of 580.

guess not.

it does get hairy a few blocks south and east of park

...two blocks from the 35th ave murder a few months ago, and 100 feet from the dakota st murder. Ten years ago the phone lines on my block were shot out by an AK 47. We have had four murders in my area in a year...:rofl:rofl:rofl
Four blocks from my house you can buy hookers and blow on 35th and school
do you have a link to this murder?
just wondering as I live in the same area. right by 38th & redding.

It was probably at the quikstop on the east side of 580 but the body was moved. Check the OPD website, they show all the murders.

38th and Redding! Easy Lucky shopping!

What a shithole.

Bad form. :|

Oakland might not be the greatest place on earth but there's a lot of people who call it home and lots of people who work their butts off to make it a safer place, day in and day out.

Seems really disrespectful to these folks to be calling it a 'shithole'...just my $.02

New count: 103. I stand corrected, Oakland is lovely!:thumbup

OAKLAND — An aspiring 19-year-old dental assistant out walking with his girlfriend Friday night was killed and the woman critically injured when someone open fired on them without warning not far from the woman's home, police said.

Authorities identified the slain man as Marco A. Casillas of Oakland. The name of his 19-year-old girlfriend was not released.

"This is just a horrible tragedy. You have a young couple who were just out walking and all of a sudden they are attacked for no apparent reason. I can't imagine how shocking and painful it must be for their families," Sgt. Jim Rullamas, the lead investigator, said Saturday,

The shooting happened about 10:45 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of Santa Rita Street, a residential area in Fruitvale.

Residents reported hearing gunfire and seeing a man fleeing in a waiting car. Police found both lying on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds. Casillas died at Highland Hospital at 11:11 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

The woman was in critical but stable condition Saturday at a local hospital. Rullamas said that police have not been able to establish a motive for the shooting but have ruled out robbery.

Authorities said that Casillas was visiting the woman at her house and that they were taking her dog out for a walk when they were shot. The dog was not injured.

Authorities said the pair first met in junior high and graduated from different high schools. Casillas

was attending a school to become a dental assistant and was working at an Alameda pizza parlor and for an Alameda dentist, authorities said.

The killing was Oakland's 103rd homicide of the year. Last year at this time, there were 101 homicides.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $15,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the shooter.

Alright dude, you made your point...people are dying in Oakland. Wow. It's been like that for a while, in case you haven't noticed.

In fact, why don't you go up to an OPD LEO and say 'hey man! this city you serve is a total shithole!'

:thumbup

San Jose, SF, LA, every major CA city has major problem areas. I like living in Oakland. I don't walk the streets in fear. Unless I see Hooli coming.
Correction, every major city ANYWHERE has problem areas.

We all have pitbulls

About as useful as waving a daisy in the air as far as home defense goes. :laughing

NorCal, you never answered my question.

Where do you live?
I am going to guess, Detroit :wow

I live in a bad part of San Diego. My wife and I are the only two white (~50/50 Mexican and black) people on my block (probably farther if I paid attention). I told a former black coworker where I lived and he said "Skyline? What are you doing there, I wouldn't want to live there." Funny since I feel much safer here then I ever did living in military housing. You leave a bicycle out at night in Coast Guard housing and it would be stolen, I leave my garage door open all night/day and find all my tools, my bike on a trailer, etc all right where I left them. Only danger is the idiots who pass through thinking it is a race track. Oh, and watch how the neighbors come to life when those idiots do pass through, you don't want to see my neighbor Dennis on his bad side :teeth

True, but real Oaklanders think people from other cities are pussies, wimps, wusses and all wear panties.

As far as Pit Bulls and home defense... Burglars don't enter homes with working Pit Bulls. They go somewhere they aren't. Too much trouble.

Nah, that is what my mutt little brat (from the Alameda shelter) is for. The one that is currently curled up with the kitten :laughing She is far scarier. Corinne (from the Oakland shelter) would just hide behind Mai're, or hide under the desk in my spare room :laughing

My last Pit used to go up to the chain link gate and try to tear a hole in it when people walked by, while growling and snarling. He got out once and kept the neighbor from getting out of his car for ten minutes.
