Driving up to Auburn this upcoming Saturday and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good roads I could explore on my way there.
Thanks

Yes pashnit.com is a 20.00 yearly fee for the roads section but imho it's worth it.
I'm going to assume the op has all day to get to Auburn.
1]580 east out past Tracy
2] Hwy 132 east towards Modesto.
3] Stay on 132 through Modesto & follow it all the way out to Coulterville
& Hwy 49.
4] Turn north on Hwy 49 and take it north up through Placerville and on up to Auburn.
Here I used Modesto as a focal point.

I would go out through Antioch, though the delta (nice 2 lane roads and small towns) which will get you just outside Sacramento. Thereafter, I believe it is hard to find roads that are not covered with shopping malls and car dealers.

Two good suggestions to which I'll add a third. Go out 80 to Cordelia, head north up Wooden Valley Road to Hwy 121, then northeast to the junction with 128, then east to Winters, then Davis. Pretty boring from there, but you have to deal with the valley eventually. If you want to get off the freeway at about Loomis, you can find some local roads to take you the rest of the way to Auburn.

To get to the foothills, if you leave early in the a.m. the sun will be in your eyes and you'll be faced with a least 2 hours of flat land riding and doing about the speed limit. (Gotta watch out for those pesky CHP cruisers -- they're everywhere!)

Then when you come home in the afternoon, you're stuck for at least 2 hours of flat land riding with the frickin' lowering sun in your eyes. And then there might be an awful headwind to deal with. But holy cow! You can speed like crazy!

Riding in the Sierra foothills though is totally worth it.

And you don't have to pay to look at the maps on Pashnit. Lots of rides in various threads there include the route riders took. You can also look here on BARF for mapped-out routes.

The last time I rode to Auburn I took Highway 160 from Antioch to Sacramento then Florin Rd followed by Auburn Blvd all the way to Auburn. Those last two aren't quite as interesting as the first road, but better than freeway.

I then took Highway 49 all the way to its southern end at Oakhurst. Sometimes you need to go on exploring rides like that, or at least I need to do it.
-----Edit: fix road name error-----

Folsom Blvd will never get you to Auburn:laughing

Maybe you were on Auburn Folsom Rd?

Auburn Blvd doesnt go to Auburn either, it ends where it turns into Riverside Ave in roseville. As i stated earlier it is Auburn Folsom Rd.:laughing

Okay, I see it now. If you get on Folsom Blvd headed northeast, and you don't turn off of it, it changes its name to Auburn-Folsom Rd and eventually you end up in Auburn.

Picky, picky. :rolleyes

That one is pretty fun. If extra time is available I would avoid Davis/I-80 and instead head north from Winters onto I-505 for a few minutes til you hit Hwy 16, then take that through the Cache Creek canyons until you hit Hwy 20, then stay on 20 east through Yuba City all the way to Grass Valley and back down 49 to Auburn. Slow but scenic. :teeth

Once you get past 99, ('cause I donno nuthin bout Oakland!) I'd highly recommend highway 26 out to 49, and just run that up to Auburn. 49 gets slightly traffic-y after 10~100AM, but since you don't know the road, the traffic shouldn't seem too tedious.

26 all the way to the end and then crossing over to 49 through Volcano, is more fun, but it's been sanded about halfway between 49 and West Point, so the fun diminishes this time of year. Plus it's cold.

You can also take E16 from Plymouth, up Bucks Bar, and hook back up with 49 which is fun. E16 is rough in spots though. A lot of my friends hate it. :laughing

Thanks for all the quick replies.
@Stormdragon: I'm actually headed to where you are, Cool, CA. But I wasn't sure anyone would know where that is. I have family there and a friend is running a 50k in the hills. Figured it was a good excuse to go for a long ride.

I won't have tons of time on the way out there because I have to make it to the finish line before my friend does, but I will on the way back. Staying over night in Woodland and figured I would check out some roads near Berryessa on the way back. I'm liking the Antioch/Delta idea. Been through there in a car and remember it being quite beautiful.

Thanks again.

Take the River Road up from Antioch to Sac.

Find HWY 50 and ride up to Hwy 49 in Placerville.

Take 49 to Cool. It's a great ride thru Gold Country (Coloma. Pilot Hill, etc.)

Or:

Once you get to Sac: cruise up 50 to Folsom (the city not the road) take Salmon Falls Road to Hwy 49 @ Pilot Hill. Then, about 5 miles to cool.:thumbup

I grew up for a short time in Pilot Hill. It's also fun to take Rattlesnake Bar Road all the way down to Folsom Lake!

Yeah, I always say I 'live near Auburn' myself. It saves a lot of time in trying to explain Cool. :cool

Well if you have some time while you're here, I can run you up and down a few interesting roads. And if you want to come back in the summer, we'll run you up Wentworth, and maybe over the sooper sekret loop up to Foresthill. Com3 seems to like that one.
