You should have to speak the langauge however, as other's have said, If i went to another country, I'd have to learn. They wouldn't catter to me.

Ah, but would they cater to you? That's question. I have no idea what this "catter" thing is. :dunno Does it have to do with your pets? :twofinger

How many of us have driven in countries where our grasp of the language is limited to ordering beer? :cool

You don't need to know English to drive, you just need to know a few key words (stop, speed limit, caution, etc) and you need to understand the colors (green = go, red = stop, yellow = caution), which are more or less the same everywhere in the world, and the shapes and symbols which can vary country to country but are generally pretty intuitive.

As such, there should be no requirement to speak english to take the driving exam.

Yes, how else are you gonna understand road signs, the legal print on all forms, communicate medical info in case of an accident, ...

If you live in the US, learn English or GTFO! I am an immigrant and came here for the culture, not to push for exceptions because I'm too lazy to learn.

But Mexicans don't speak Spanish, they speak their own version of Spanish, which might as well be called Mexican :)

yup.....that's why Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese are different......

i think we should all refer to it as 'Mexicanish' from now on.......or maybe 'Spanexican'

hell...we already have 'Spanglish' for crisake.....

;)

There is no legal obligation to be able to communicate medical information, and the english skills you might need to fill out forms has nothing to do with your actual capacity to drive in a safe and lawful manner. And as I said above, road signs are almost universally obvious and can be picked up very quickly by just about anyone.

Mexican isnt a language, and no native speaker of SPANISH is going to say "No, yo necesito vamos trabajar". If you're going to make shit up, do your homework first. :thumbdown

When is something a different language? IIRC Mexican Spanish is not the same as Castillian (sp?) Spanish.

This reminds me of something a French girl told me on getting in from Quebec. "I don't know what the language they spoke was, but it wasn't French."

On the flipside, if they didn't offer the translated services, and the intimidation factor of going to the DMV for someone to get a license for those that didn't speak English went even higher, I'm sure there would be a spike in even more unlicensed/unisured drivers as something tells me they wouldn't stop driving.

sounds like a great way for ETS to make even more billions.

gonna need TOEFL scores to get a license now? big nanny gubmint FTL.

Cuban spanish isnt the same as castilian, El salvadorean spanish isnt the same as castilian, Mexican spanish isnt the same as castilian, Peruvian spanish isnt the same as castilian, Argentinian spanish isnt the same as castilian..etc

And in Spain, Galician and Catalan isnt the same as castilian..yet it is ALL Spanish.

The United States doesnt speak the same English as Great Britian, yet no one wants to call the what we speak here, United Statecian.

You can always try holding them at gunpoint. A gun pointed at you says the same in every language :)

I don't know why, but I like that advice!! :thumbup

Parisian French is actually quite a bit different from the version of French spoken by the Quebecois.

My Grandfather came over from Greece about 85+ years ago. As part of his citizenship, he was required to learn English, and be proficient at it.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
When in America, SPEAK ENGLISH.
