A truck driver from London, Ont., has been fined $305 for smoking in the cabin of a tractor-trailer because it is considered a workplace.

Essex County Ontario Provincial Police pulled over a truck on Highway 401 near Windsor, Ont., at about noon on Wednesday after the driver, 48, was seen smoking.

He was fined under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, a 2006 law that prohibits smoking in enclosed workplaces and public areas such as bars and restaurants.

:wow WTF man? he's in the truck alone. According to other articles I found about this the driver is the owner/operator as well. Sounds like a quota filling issue to me.

That is really going to far! Damm Canucks!

I forgot where I read it but a while back a truck driver was finishing up loading his rig and went to the weight scale before setting out, he was over his limit and a cop gave him a weight limit fine before he even left the lot and had a chance to do anything about it... he was barely off the scale before being handed the ticket...

really shady...

I have never heard of a weigh station being on property of a loading dock/yard.

Perhaps your story is a bit incorrect.

fine with me, i hate it when i check out a company car and it smells like an ashtray.

he probably didn't pass the attitude check.

where I grew up there is a law that you have to have a state approved littler bag in the car at all times. not just some sort of plastic bag, but state approved. the only time I have ever heard of somebody getting a ticket for it what when they pisses off the cop. smells like the same thing to me here.

as for this guy, no tears from me. i don't smoke and i don't live in Onterio or Canada.

Many truck yards have scales. You are specifically meaning a CHP weigh station, correct? Yeah, I don't know how a private scale can be used to issue a fine while still on private property.

I don't remember the exact details as I read the story a while back (maybe a couple years?) but I remember trucker guy was upset because he got a fine before being able to do anything about it... like he was barely off the scales and the cop was giving him a ticket...

I saw something similar to this happen on an episode of "Ice Road Truckers" when I was bored one day.

maybe that's where i saw it :rofl
it's amazing what randomly stays in someone's mind... I think I saw 2 episodes and of all things to stick with me, that's the only thing apparently :teeth

As was already pointed out, it wasn't a shared vehicle, it was his own.

he probably didn't pass the attitude check.

There shouldn't be an attitude check and of COURSE the trucker is going to be pissed off. That's in the top 10 BS tickets of all time.

The last sentence...wow. Most news stories these days can start or end with "And few cared because it didn't effect them".

last time i checked, smoker wasn't a protected class.

No, but it's a private conveyance, owned by him, not a workplace open to the public or any employees.

:thumbdown

But then again, it's Canada, taking the stupid :bs that happens in the UK, and turning it up to 11.
