PAGING BAD DAD

No, but it would be walking a fine line, and adding a "fuck you" in front of "asshole" would likely result in moderation.

Serious question. Do you think it detracts from BARF that you cannot say "fuck you" (or something else like that) to someone?

I think it detracts because you can't outright say it... it thus creates a whole slew of euphemisms that can be interpreted any way the reader wants

like
ffffffffuuuuuuu
:twofinger

where as a simple
fuck off
fuck you
pretty much conveys what I wanted it to and leaves little for interpretation

There needs to be context.

There are plenty of times that a well placed "fuck you" can do a lot of good (or bad) in a discussion, same as people calling one another an asshole or saying that someone is acting like an asshole, etc.

There's a time and a place for everything. Yes, I realize that it's not easy to judge the context of something typed into a forum post, but at the same time the solution doesn't seem to be a wide, sweeping moratorium on certain words and phrases that are used relatively often.

Now before the people who are much better at conveying thoughts and ideas than I am say that it's not necessary to use profanity or to call someone an asshole, etc, I'll pre-emptively say that dumb guys such as myself don't always have the ability to write as well as others. :twofinger

Could you elaborate via PM? Thanks.

I was just saying name changes are a pet peeve...I can never keep them straight! :p

The world was better when we had Feanor and Jocelyn, outing them did not make my world better-didn't make BARF better and served as a brief flash of entertainment v. the years of good reading and insight that would have prevailed.
Feanor outing = FAIL
Loss of the Maiden = FAIL

After Cold Shower (which ended a long time ago) it was mostly just a bunch of random trolling when he posted outside of motorcycle topics. In fact, it was a particularly bad shit stirring troll post he made under the Jocelyn account that prodded me to get to the bottom of it once and for all. And I certainly wasn't the only one that was thinking "enough already!" You could see that opinion expressed in a large percentage of the replies to his trolls. Outing the shenanigans just got rid of some small amount of drama around here, and yet there's still plenty left to go around.

Besides, he's only gone now by his own choice. Seems to me he doesn't have much interest in being part of this forum other than as a fictitious personality... What's the common opinion on people that never show up at meets, etc?

This is stupid, and its all because people get pissed off because of over moderation and leave, taking others with them.

A+ for irony!

Absolutely - This is a motorcycle forum named BARF, with the happy logo of a smiley flipping the bird. Banning someone for saying fuck you, is pretty ironic don't you think?

BARF, in any form will cease to exist without users. On this topic we have almost unanimous agreement from the user base. The only detractors are the mods. Why is that?

Personally, I don't.

As I recall, the TOS doesn't specifically prohibit name calling; it requires members to interact respectfully. Name calling is an easy, non-ambiguous infraction, so it gets reported more often and enforced more often. One result is some members engage in games to call people names without literally calling people names. Instead of saying, "You're an asshole," they'll say, "You remind me of an asshole I know." Somehow, this seems to avoid repercussions.

I cannot agree with this statement, as I've maybe read the opinions of a dozen in this regard when we have a membership of thousands, but I see what you are trying to say. I'd like to hear from some more, like tzrider.

I agree about the word games.

Please, no need to antagonize other members. You did make a statement that was pretty broad, and a member merely refuted your statement from a personal perspective. Perhaps you should rethink or reword your "almost unanimous" statement.

Articulate, please.

What are we detracting from?

I've been a mod for one year, it's not like everything suddenly changes because I vote on whether or not someone broke the TOS. Mods are members, I think that gets lost in a lot of people's thinking.

Bap, yes there may be thousands of registered barf members, however there are only a few hundred truly active users. And, as B4B so keenly observed I don't speak for everyone. However, it's been *MY* observation that many of the more active and vocal users tend to be pretty black and white on this topic.
