CHP showing up to trackdays and checking bikes for theft

That would be in your tent only.

No, my whole campground. Whatever it is I'm "renting" would be "my property" for the duration of my stay. Just like your property at home isn't defined by your house.

All for thieves getting caught but I don't like where this going. If this catches steam it will only escalate to more thorough inspections above and beyond simple VIN checks.

Correct, it was Laguna.

You can't just drive into Infineon.

I'm curious on both though.

You can't just drive onto the track at Sears Point (or Laguna), but if I show up at the gate and say I have business with a shop up on the hill (unless it's NASCAR weekend, etc.) I get in. It's open to the public.

Some questions I have are, like Ernie said, what if its a replacement frame thats not stamped with a VIN?
Also, if your bike is registered with DMV as NON-OP, can you get cited for operating it or will that cause any problems?
As I've read in other threads, a NON-OP vehicle means that it shouldnt even be turned on. But that could be applied for public roads and not towards a track. Again, just some questions I have.

You have business with a shop, that is different than open to the public. You have to sign a release and give your song and dance to a security guard, who is monitoring the gate. It isn't quite the same as going to the mall.

Can people freely walk up to my front door and knock on it? IIRC The tent is like the house- it falls under a domicile, thus requiring a search warrant/exigent circumstances/PC or consent to search.

Are you saying those aren't needed for my back yard?

EDIT:
Of course you can walk up to someones door. But if I tell you to leave, you must. If you are a cop you also must, right?

If I fenced in my campsite, could you search it?

Aren't there better things the CHP could be doing during this budget crisis? Next thing you know they'll be doing parade laps in C group making sure you don't do wheelies :rolleyes

What I am curious about is the need for a VIN. If you build a track bike from the ground up using a custom frame, and its only ever used for track events, why would it need a VIN? If it did how would you get one?

If it does'nt, then by the same logic, could'nt a thief simply disguise a track only bike by removing the VIN?
See below (or above) from AFM199. And yes, you can register a race only vehicle. Here is where to read:
CHAPTER 2. REGISTRATION OF OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES; ORIGINAL AND
RENEWAL OF IDENTIFICATION; ISSUANCE OF
CERTIFICATES OF OWNERSHIP
Article 1. Motor Vehicles Subject to Identification ......... 38010-38030
Article 2. Original Identification .......................... 38040-38060
Article 3. Evidences of Identification ...................... 38070-38100
Article 4. Renewal of Identification ........................ 38110-38135
Article 5. Refusal of Identification ........................ 38145-38150
Article 6. Identification Plate or Device ................... 38160-38170
Article 7. Dismantling of Off-Highway Motor Vehicles ........ 38180-38185
Article 8. Transfers of Title or Interest ................... 38195-38211
Article 9. Identification Fees .............................. 38225-38265

they were only checking numbers for alteration, not against a database. The guy they busted had obviously altered numbers.

Better than catching thieves, like giving you a ticket for going 3 mph over?

Your choice.

Chk your PMs.

Anybody can go to that shop... I also doubt a CHP Officer would be asked to sign the waiver by the $8/hr guard at the gate.:laughing If a mall had gates and had you sign a "hold harmless" agreement, it's still open to the public.

I'm pretty sure that there is nothing the chp can do about you doing wheelies at the track. Stolen property is stolen property no matter where it is. Please check for stolen bikes at every track day. If your bike was stolen and was recovered from a track day, I think you would thank the chp. I would never buy a bike that was'nt registered. You are asking for trouble.

it was a joke referring to the parade lap nazis at Laguna Seca two years ago.

Don't let the cops do this. They MUST have reason to inspect your bike.

So you support thieves?

If they aren't delaying you (and in this case at Laguna they were looking for altered VINs, not running out every VIN) I don't have a problem with it.

I can walk onto your yard until you ask me to leave too.....is your front yard "private"

:teeth

What if I'm having a dinner at someone else's house that I paid to use, that I ran an advertisement for, with guests that I am charging? Seems like more of an appropriate comparison.
