Hi, I purchased a motorcycle frame/motor from out of state and when I went to the dmv, they informed me that I had to go to the CHP for an inspection:

REFERRED TO CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL FOR INSPECTION. IF THIS IS A REVIVED TOTAL LOSS VEHICLE, A CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL INSPECTION CERTIFICATE (CHP97C) IS REQUIRED BEFORE THE APPLICATION CAN BE COMPLETED.

Can anyone give me a run through on what to expect? I've reassembled the bike to its stock specs except for the aftermarket exhaust and rear shock. I'm worried the inspector may ding me on the exhaust and ask the stock one to be re-installed prior to passing.

Any suggestions would be great.

Ed

I was under the impression that the CHP inspection is only for VIN/EIN. Other bikes are sometimes required to be inspected by a shop for brakes and lights, which it sounds like you'll have no issues with.

I'd be rather surprised if they care about the pipe.

I did this last year for a bike out of Washington. The DMV inspector looked for matching numbers on the engine, and the emissions compliance sticker.

The numbers he looked for on the engine was NOT the vin BTW.

No disrespect but it is the CHP we're talking about here! :nerd That and it's a full Termignoni exhaust system.......

I know some CHP who would say "Nice exhaust. Keep it down in the residential areas. Here's your paperwork. Have a nice day."

As the others have said about the engine number and the VIN. They will run a check on their database to see if there is any upcomings regarding the numbers. That is all. I don't know about a requirement regarding inspections.

I brought back out dismantled to licensed and the DMV will send you to CHP for the number check and CHP will sign the DMV form. Then you return to DMV and they give you a lic plate, reg, and you will receive a title in the mail in about 2 weeks.
