For those that are without a secure garage to park their bikes in, would you use the services of a secure bike warehouse/storage with 24-hour access, a surveillance system, and 24-hour security personnel?

This is akin to using public storage to park your bike in, but the glaring differences are in your ability to be able to access your bike any time of the day or night, a video surveillance system in place, and rotating security personnel to cover all 24 hours of the day. Other pluses are that your bike will be stored in a climate-controlled building, availability of an electrical source for a battery tender (for those long-term storing) with an option to use your own tender or lease the company's, and perhaps availability of an insurance discount (for comprehensive coverages) a la LoJack. Location of the warehouse will be in the South Bay, close to the airport; it would be an industrial area with easy freeway access.

Please vote on the poll, and if you happen to vote "Depends," please share more of your terms/concerns for maybe using this service.

You may also indicate if you prefer a contract service (6-month, 12-month, etc.), and/or if you'd like an option of a per-day charge.

If i lived in the area in an apt or something of the sort, where i didn't already have a secure place to store my bike, i would totally invest in keeping it in a garage like described. But probabaly something simpler and less expensive than what is described

Cost of operation, and therefore cost to the customer is still being discussed and considered. Obviously, the price would have to be more than reasonable for this to even happen, and (more) obviously, like a group buy, the more people to use the service, the cheaper it could be for everyone.

Might be wise to drop the 24/7 guard and battery tenders for all at first, keep initial costs down to increase customer base, then add perks when they're more economical.

depends on if i needed it....

i already have secure 24 hour locked storage. if i didnt live in a house, i'd definitely consider it... i'd probably prefer a lease term to lock in a price

To offer 24-hour access, we'd need personnel to facilitate it. Otherwise, it would be just like your average public storage system.

We are considering operating hours that start at the wee hours of the morning and late-night closing, seeing as it's unlikely for a rider to need access to their bike during normal sleeping hours.

i would want 24 hour access... that would be a deal breaker for me.

I understand. We actually think that offering 24-hour access is what would really set this service apart from regular storage.

Is this one big shared warehouse where you have shared space with everyone else's bike? I don't need this service, but I would think that it would be much better if you had your own private storage where you can put your stands, tools, gear, etc..

The initial plan is yes, one big shared warehouse.

We thought about having enclosed partitions within the warehouse, kind of like horse stables, to offer gear and equipment security as well, but this clearly drove up the cost of the operation, and therefore cost to the customer.

We left that plan as Plan 2.0; if the simpler system worked, then Plan 2.0 is where it would all go.

I wouldnt cuz Id have to get there somehow to get it. Id get rid of the bike if I wasnt comfy keeping it near by.

It would be awesome if it werent open 24hrs and a member figured out how to break in and steal his bike out at night.

It's an interesting concept, but what happens if some numbnut tips over a neighbors bike while getting his bike in/out?

Insurance and liability are being concerned, and I think that the video surveillance would help in situations like this. We also talked about having personnel roll the bikes in and out to the customer.

I would not be interested given my specific circumstances, but can see how I would be.

First, I'd need to own a car and treat my bike like a toy. My bike is currently my only vehicle, so I need it nearby at all times. That brings up another point; I'd want easy access to it. Unless someone is going to come pick me up to let me get my bike and drop me off when I'm done, it'd be too much of a hassle.

I'd also want real security, not psuedo-security. I want guards with real guns.

Having the storage area have a designated work zone would be a big plus. Along with not having storage space right now, I don't have a place to do basic maintenance. If I could just change my tires, lube my chain, change my spark plugs, etc on occasion it'd be a useful spot. Have the tools provided so I don't have to lug it all around, and your security should prevent theft.

Contracts I'd like the option of daily, 3 month, 6 month, and annual. Daily if I go on vacation and don't want the service for long. Three month and six month if I find myself with a temp job. Annual if I find myself out of a job, or long-term to receive a discounted rate.

I don't think anyone who does it actually *wants* to leave their bike on the street but it all comes down to price and convienence.

convienence is made up of:
- hours of access
- location
- privacy and amount of space (work area, gear, etc)
- general corporate interaction (billing, customer service, etc)
- rules and regulations (enough to protect the customer and their gear from asshats and accidents but not to be overbearing and restrictive i.e.: no changing your oil)

you have a lot to consider as the proprieter
- location - motorcycle ownership density without garages
- liability
- ROI on investment to build out and secure location, advertising, etc
- managing the business
- dealing with asshats
and a whole lot more.

I like the idea and in certain areas (high density) you would get a lot of customers if the price was right.

I really doubt you could compete with the cost of theft insurance, And the insurance covers my bike everywhere.

Youre probably right if your at old, good, and have a 98 Tiger.
Insurance for little young me on a new R1 would be out of the question.

You would also have to provide secure parking for cages when people drive to the facility to get their bike. Having it close to BART would be a huge plus.

Sorry, I had ta vote no. Live'in in da backwoods, I ain't gotta worry 'bout such thangs. As a matter of fact, the key's in my bike right now. :teeth
