I have no paper work for a YSR50 that I have had for about the last 6-7 years. When I bought it, I had the PD search to see if it was stolen by the vin number, and it came back as not on file. I want to get the bike plated, but it no longer has the original engine in it. When the CHP checks for the engine number, what exactly are they looking for. Will I ever be able to get plates for the thing?

Very little.

Get the brake and light and go to DMV. They might require an inspection from CHP but no big deal.

We check engine numbers just like vin numbers.

Have a statement of facts prepared for DMV stating that the engine came with the bike at the time of sale, or whatever the circumstances are....

If DMV wants an REG 124 or a REG 343, any officer can sign it off.

If DMV wants a CHP97C, then you'll need to make an appointment. (There are only 18 CHP officers who do this inspection statewide, so there will be a little wait.)

Easy peasy...
 
Don't get fooled by DMV.

They are to do the inspection first. They are first listed on the paperwork, THEN they refer people to CHP if needed.

Download a REG 343 and look at the bottom.... DMV is first on the inspection list.

One more question. What if the engine is not the original, as in one that was never intended to be installed in the bike? FWIW, the bike is long out of the system.
 
Not a big deal. We'll verify it as it is and correct the paperwork accordingly. If you bought a new motor keep the mso's.

Simple.
