Yeah!

OK.....got my taxes completed. One major project at work is done and delivered. Second project is going well. Tiger is on the lift getting it's oil changed. Just bought a new DS helmet. Guess I'm going to the Carrizo Plain, if not beyond!!!!
:ride

Sounds good Greg! I'll probably just take my street helmet, as I don't use goggles and it's already claimed the camera mount.

Taxes... bleah... extension time. :laughing

Our last DS ride to Mendocino NF convinced me of the need for a helmet w/visor when riding a dusty dirt road late in the afternoon and heading into a setting sun.

So for all the north/east bay riders and any one else who wants to, let's meet up at target in pleasant hill at say 7:30am on sat morning. Take the concord ave exit off 680. Everyone got their stuff ready? Getting excited?. So Rod, what's the addy on the gas station in San Jose so I can plug it into my iPhone. Can't seem to open the map on my iPad ?

Hey Tim, looks like it's 1250 East Julian Street in San Jose. At the SE corner of E. Julian Street and N. 26th Street. From Southbound 101 take the McKee Road / Julian St. exit, it curves right, turn left at the light onto Julian, it'll be the Arco station on the left. If Google street view is accurate, anyway! :)

I'll add a link to the map in post #1, maybe that will help with the iPad.

Can't wait! :ride

How about 8:00am for a meet time...KSU at 8:15. That puts us in San Jose around 9:00.

I added a San Jose meeting time of 9am to post #1, with KSU at 9:15 sharp.

Meeting at 8:00 in Pleasant Hill should work if KSU is really 8:15 and no later! I'll plan to meet up with y'all there.

Have fun, y'all are gonna have great weather. :thumbup

Regarding Death Valley, there's a nice zoomable map of the park here. You can see where the "attractions" are, what's paved, what's dirt, and get a crude idea of how rough the dirt roads are (for what it's worth I don't plan to do anything gnarly).

Food for thought!

Road Conditions

Hey...

I'm a bit concerned about road conditions, wanted to get some thoughts on that.

Carrizo is supposed to get a lot of rain tomorrow, and none Saturday. I just called down there and talked to a ranger, he said the roads dry up pretty fast after a rain but will be a bit more slippery than normal. The only dirt on Saturday will be the 4-5 miles on Selby road going to the campground, and he says that's one of their best (dirt) roads. We'll have more dirt on Sunday on Soda Lake road, but that should be the second dry day.

The other issue is getting home. I was gonna go up and over on 89 and 50, but right now those are requiring chains and I guess they'll get more snow tomorrow. I'm not really excited about backtracking after DV for a 2-day ride home.

What do y'all think? Maybe a 1-week postponement?

I think it will be sunny all next week, no? If so the pavement on 88, 50 etc will be dry and ice free especially if we hit the passes before mid afternoon.

Yeah those passes are the main issue, I'm not so concerned about Carrizo. So you're saying it just takes a couple of days for them to get the snow cleared? If so, no problem.

If you go South on 395 then cut through Kern Canyon you can camp at Miricle Hot Springs then slab from Bakersfield.

I'll look at a map and get you route numbers.
