Death Valley Tour, April 14-18, 2012

I think that everyone riding with us should PM Rodr their cell phone and mobile email. Then you could aggregate them and send them out all in a lump.

In your PM to Rod, please add any dinner preferences/ideas for Sat nite, and if you are bringing a stove so we have a count.

Here's my first pass on possible dinners:
- spaghetti/meat sauce/bread
- steak tacos w/rice/beans
- chilli
- burgers/sausages
- steak sandwichs
- pasta + protein
and of course the backpacker's classic...mac n cheese and wieners...:twofinger

9a, Saturday April 14 at the San Jose Arco (Point A) works for me.

Good for me as well. I think it will give us plenty of time for the ride down plus stops and provisioning.

Anyone with a range less than 150miles, bring a siphon - most ADV bikes have big tanks, the vstroms carry 5.8gals...I'm sure we can spare a few pints for our friends :teeth :twofinger

I've been playing with the first-day routing, thinking about going to San Miguel and then a 30-mile slab down the 101 to Santa Margarita. This shaves off about 45 minutes, offers San Miguel as a lunch stop around 12:30-1:00, and gives some more options for picking up provisions.

I may be able to do A to B then back to A again...maybe via 1 thru jaciemento if I can get time off for good behavior.:burnout fingers crossed for 2 days free!
Phat chance! :chuci
I'm stil debate'in whether ta do one day or 2? :p

Also I noticed a motel on Soda Lake Road, about 18 miles before the campground, might be a good option for anyone not into camping.

I don't know if it's been asked yet, but have you called the motel to ask about availability? I called them about a month ago and was told they were booked solid for the foreseeable future.
It seems there's a big solar project going on out there and all the rooms are booked by the workers, and will be for some time to come. :thumbdown

With the help of a mod, I've changed the dates in the thread title to April 14-18 (instead of 14-20), as that is my current plan. Also it doesn't look like anyone else wants to stay longer either.

Also I'm open to spending the last night (the 17th) camping somewhere in the park instead of in Beatty, if others are interested.

Good to know, thanks. I tried calling them yesterday but no answer. Will try again if anyone cares.

from Parkhill to 58 is a whole lot of dirt forest roads and I can't find any info at all as to what condition it's in or if it will even be open.

58 is better is you like fast paved twisties. Parkhill etc. is better if you like goaty stuff.

Parkhill etc. is a fun route, you should do it if you have time. Parkhill Rd. is all nice twisty pavement and the dirt part goes thru the Pozo-La Panza ohv area. It's easy well graded dirt as long as you stay on the main roads.

Navajo Rd. is paved all the way to the top where the junction is with Blk. Mtn. Rd. and dirt down the Navajo Flat staging area. Turn right there and head past the La Panza campground to 58.

Pozo grade is more dirt and a lot twistier. If you do this route, top by the Pozo Saloon for a beverage. It's a cool old wild west saloon with a lot of history.

And there are hotels in Taft also.

Dude. Is there any place you haven't been? :laughing

This is great info. Probably not gonna use it this trip, but someone else might and I'll definitely file it away for the future. Thanks!

Y'all ready for next weekend? :teeth

We have a nice group shaping up for the first night's camping, looks like there will be 7-8 total. And it's really cool to see a couple of them wanting to come and camp with us even though they don't have time to press on to DV!

Just got back from getting the new tires and fresh fork oil. My wife rolled her eyes and said "did you get flowers for it too?" :laughing

Thanks! Looks like last month was super windy. I'm hoping mid-April will be just about perfect weather-wise.

Here's another DV ride report from last month to get everyone in the mood. This guy rides a beast like mine, and his choice of destinations is closer to what I'm thinking. :thumbup

Five more days! :party

See the list of attendees in post #3. Let me know if you're coming but not listed, or listed and not coming!

For those coming to Beatty, remember your swimsuit -- the hotel has a pool.
