"the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down"

apologies to all the 'legitimate' dudes, had thought we could entrust the future of mankind to you, but the sooner women get tired of all this shit, get off their asses and take over, the better. :p :laughing

You know what? This squabbling back and forth between a couple of you is getting about as retarded as Akin's original comments. Knock it off already...

If your response to a prominent and powerful politician asserting (and later reiterating) that a woman inseminated by a rapist wasn't actually raped and that her rape baby is proof that she wanted it, is to focus on his opposition, it is probably time to re-examine your priorities. Step away from the political game for a minute. Find some empathy, and think like a human, not a voter.

nope. the problem is everyone looking for reasons to misinterpret to back up their political party bias. No one said that insemination had anything to do with the "legitimacy" of rape. that's all the DNC support people playing word games to distract from the truth. the real point, for those without confirmation bias blinders on, was to differentiate between *allegation* and *proven* rape. Just like the truthmongers and "fact checkers" would have done if Biden had said the same thing.

We have entire industries and reams of reports showing that stress drastically has an adverse effect on both contraception and carrying to term. Entire industries dedicated to fertility, and most of the moonbattery "alternative medicine" groups agree to this. Until now, suddenly that research and opinion don't matter because it doesn't help distract from the issues that Obama is getting slammed with, or allow the smearing of an entire political viewpoint from one deliberately butthurt reaction.

Hell, if we're gonna be stretching the "war on women" rhetoric, how many women died or were raped by criminals and cartel members using Holder-approved Fast and Furious walked guns? Who cares, right? The misspeak of a single guy means more "truth" about an entire political party than the actual deaths caused by a person being protected by executive fiat right now means about the other party.:rolleyes

Extra LOLs at our poorly worded republican as "prominent and powerful" to add even more emotional urgency to the red herring stew. Psycholinguistics at its best :)

Republicans have no game and want to take it out on the rest of us, that is the only explination for all the foolishness that I can come up with.

You harp on people for "stretching" and then reach for the sky. What is it with political followers that when any topic negative to their party comes up they immediately speak about a another totally un-related topic in order to somehow justify their "side".

The topic was about the idiot politician say idiotic things about rape and abortion. Defend him or not but you lose credibility by throwing out un-related topics as a defense.

Wow. Talk about a false equivalency.

Fifty years of the abortion wars, it's as divisive an issue as slavery probably was 150 years ago. It's really abortion that birthed a Christian political movement and shaped our current political climate.

There really isn't an "illegitimate" rape. Whether a rape has occurred has to be for the woman to decide, it's a loophole in abortion restrictions that simply can't be closed, no use even trying. The Christian right has backed themselves into a corner by defining Plan B EC as an abortifacient too. EC should be freely and broadly available. It might get cheaper too, a generic was approved last month.

Using weak science to suggest that abortion should rarely be needed because conception is rare in violent rape is pretty ridiculous coming from a group that largely rejects genetic selection.

Doesn't Plan B merely prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the endometrial lining? Abortion seems a big stretch but that's just me.

To a ProLifer, once the egg is fertile, that's life, and preventing implantation is an abortion. Amazingly, here in California's Bible Strip, a lot of providers won't write Plan B for that reason.

ProChoicers counter with studies suggesting that Plan B just prevents ovulation. Most of the science either way is biased and/or flawed. It's mainly about jousting in the media.

What if the patient requests plan B? Is it really up to the doctor to say no? I can understand saying no if someone comes in trying to score narcotics but where does a health care provider get off imposing their morals on a patient?

Completely agree, and the main reason I will never be a Republican.

"Life begins at inception".. Does that include the time from the night before a poor decision was made? I personally don't agree.

Early term, this is a grey area and where I think the discussion should be focused.

Late term, no, but again that's just me, and I'm a guy. I think like many things in life, a commitment means something. We have alternate means to address late term decision changes, namely adoption.

I'm all for legal, safe and rare. Reversing Roe .v. Wade would be a massive step back for our country. Plan B would, I assume, help address the "rare" part at least.

I am fairly sure if Republicans have control of Congress and have their guy in the white house this exactly what would happen, along with life starting with conception and who knows what else.

This may sound patronizing and infuriating, but pregnancy isn't a disease. Plan B can be obtained OTC, though possibly at greater cost than by prescription. If a provider has a belief that Plan B takes a life, or has a moral or religious objection to it's use, nothing in the traditional or legal obligations of a healer requires he prescribe it. People forget that medical care providers have rights too, including adherence to ethical or religious beliefs. I write Plan B, but in Merced County and the rest of California's Bible Strip, a surprising number of PA's, NP's and MD's don't. The patient has options, including coughing up the $45 to buy it themselves.

Also, "legitimate science," or maybe just statisticians (did I spell that right?), have done studies that put actual numbers on the frequency of pregnancy from rape. The numbers are... how do you say, not insignificant? ~32,000.

Dood...The Todd Akin view point is not an isolated nut case opinion...It is the Platform for your Republican Party! Your guy Paul Ryan co-sponsored Akin legislation..

Wha' you talkin' 'bout willis?.

Not likely, it will take an ruling in SCOTUS to overturn precedent. This would first of all require a challenge from the state's, making its way up through the federal court system simply to be presented to them.

The make up of Scotus post this next election effect's challenges ten, maybe twenty years down the line, not now.
