Going to be commuting on the bike more this winter and I need some recommendations of a good neck gaiter/balaclava for said purposes. Anybody have opinions on some good ones? Non-itchy?

I crochet my own. Want me to make you one? :teeth

I have some left that Mad English Cow made. Proceeds would go towards Adam (carries an Axe). You could paypal them directly and I'll cover sending it to you. They're really nice fleece. :teeth

A windproof buff works wonders. It can be pushed down on those cool summer nights to prevent cold air from entering through the neck hole of your jacket and pulled up to protect your neck & chin in winter or on those really cold mornings.

+1 I like the Turtle fur on the coldest days, and when it's raining

+1 otherwise, my normal daily wear neck protector came from cycle gear, it's the Anti-Freeze brand. I takes up very little space, so you can always carry it with you.

NOTE: I found that keeping my neck warm GREATLY decreased my incidences of getting sick :banana

I like mine, forgot brand name oops! :wtf

Also, in a pinch (like, I forgot it), newspaper w/a piece of tape will work. Just tuck excess under coat & tape the edges of newspaper together. Might chaff the old beard/neck a bit, but when it's 40' & raining, & you have 200 miles to go, it saved me tons of frozen grief.

I had a light fleece unit that I got at REI, & it worked awesome.
Also have the TURTLE FUR unit that is thin around the head and thicker on the face and neck.

Ive been wearing a real light unit that has neoprene on the face. Hitting the road at 5 am, its a might chilly.

I'm gonna check out the full head turtle fur. I have a simple neck warmer for skiing that I could use, but was looking for something a little better.

Keep in mind that mc use is kinda specific. There are alot of them that dont work so good with a helmet. If they are too thick around the head, it will make your helmet too tight, or even compress your inner liner so that it would/could be too loose without the balaclava.

I'd gotten several recommendations for the Under Armour's UA Cold Gear Hood. Tried it and it does work well under a helmet but I found that I didn't like the feel of it. I gave it away to another 4 season rider and he loves it.

I still use a tube type neck gaiter. After my helmet goes on I tuck the edge in at the cheek pads. It stays in place and there's plenty of fabric layers to insulate.

I use the tube style as well. Try Buffwear...they have a few options with varying thickness

i use a baklava from a bicycle shop, thin so no problems in the helmet.
a thin hoodie. and a neck warmer to help out carries a ax (see post #5 this thread).

no cold air gets to my neck/face/body i stay warm even in sub freezing temps + wind chill factor.

but i do have heated gloves for those very cold trips. no other heated stuff...yet. maybe socks this winter?

imo, the cheapest and simple is the bestest...

comfortable and if lost, who cares..

the fancy brands with velcro and triangulate shapes seems to be no better for twice the cost of a cheap one..

$5.99 -$8.99 at REI, Sportmark, etc...

it's the same thing as the one sold at mc shops for double the cost..

i found these on clearance just before summer at sportmart and it's the same thing as sold by Aerostich, American River, Olympia , etc...just rebranded....

$7.99
