MSRP For Ninja 300.

The KX450F is WAY higher tech than the Ninja 300. The ROW Ninja 250 got EFI in 2008, other than that it's all mid 80s tech.

Only Honda's 250 has efi. All of kawis 250s are carbd.

wtf did that dealer do? Tie two together? How can one option out a bike to that?!?!

There's a popular motorcycle group (owns a string of dealers) in AZ that is pretty infamous within the motorcycle community for jacking up costs by tacking on a whole bunch of crap - not necessarily physical options, but those 'insurance/warranty' items got it up there (I think). While they are probably one of the more successful groups around - they definitely have been known to rip one into the unknowing or new rider.

Unscrupulous dealers will continue to be unscrupulous. Just like they were four years ago. Funny how the freight and "prep" fees for the 2008+ 250 came down more and more after the initial surge of sales in the beginning and they weren't selling as many.

If someone didn't want to tack on an additional 25% - 30%, could he just take delivery of the bike and "prep" it himself?

The problem here is that there IS somebody that WANTS to tack on the additional 25-30% And that somebody is the dealership :) and they have the bike :)

Someone that worked for Honda once told me that Honda (at least) already factors in the cost of setup with the dealers and that dealers selling Honda's aren't supposed to charge those fees. I wonder if Kawasaki does the same. The reality is that given the way the bike shows up at the shop, the fees they charge to add fluids and mount a few parts is just flat out ridiculous.

No kidding. Lets add a crate and barrel fee on top of the headlight fluid overflow valve adjustment. I think the motor industry, as a whole, gets away with a lot of tacking - i wish it was as simple as buying furniture or something.

I bet if you did it yourself they'd find a way to void the warranty. But there are enough Philip J. Frys out there to keep the practice afloat. If there were a real community movement to keep dealers honest by NOT BUYING bikes with these fees, the new bike environment might become more friendly.

But then, queue the dealer sob stories about overhead and the justification for that lightly dinged up '07 SV650 with 20k miles they're selling for 5499.99 + tax, license and doc.

Turds.

(I have never bought a new vehicle. Not wanting to deal with BS like this is a big reason why)

Magnuson-Moss act would prevent them from denying you warranty coverage if you did the setup yourself.

Any fees added to MSRP are all made up and irrelevant. Ignore them and refuse to discuss them with the dealer.

Negotiate OTD price and nothing else. That is the only number that matters.

And just be prepared to wait longer for the bike you want when the dealer tells you to kick rocks. Like CABilly said, there's too many Fry's in this country that will pay what the dealer wants so that they can have the bike now...and the dealers know this.

You can generally talk dealers out of the fees. On a few bikes a fee is specified by the manufacturer so I would consider that (one fee) real, but anything else is just the dealer trying to mark up the product. You don't pay "freight" fees for any other store products, or "handling" and "checkout" and "bagging" fees for your groceries.

I'm sure manufacturers could force dealers to stop this but I guess they are scared of losing dealers. Dealers will carry the brand that allows them to gouge suckers.

Or the manufacturers could just take over their own sales. Works for Cummins.

I didn't say that you'd pay MSRP or under, I simply said that negotiating anything other than OTD price allows the dealer to tack on fees that you then have to negotiate again.

IF the dealer wants $20,000 for a Ninja 300 and I am willing to pay it, I want to have negotiated to $20k and not find the final price includes additional fees.
