Bejing Air Pollution Index 755

I heard that yesterday on NPR. And the govt reported levels may be half of actual.

Humans are a disposable resource in some places.

We should send all the folks who bitch about CARB and the EPA to China.

I don't see poisoning your population as the path to prosperity.
China will pay a heavy price for short term gain.

...except that the CARB comment operated on the philosophy that you shouldn't complain as long as there is something worse. The wife tries that argument, drives me nuts.

Difference between complaining about something and claiming it's unnecessary. My prior comment was to the many folks I've heard argue that CARB is redundant to the EPA and unnecessary.

CARB was created because CA had unique pollution problems and the EPA wouldn't do shit since a majority of states were unaffected. The only difference now is that a few other states share our population related issues. This doesn't mean I support every decision or regulation made by CARB, I'm just saying that the original reason still stands.

FWIW, I genuinely believe most folks can't grasp the matters of scale that come into play with pollution. People fill their tanks up with 100+ pounds of fuel every week and seem to think it just turns to steam.

I dunno, it's bringing a ton of wealth into that country, and helping to control their population.

I suspect they get away with it.

It's only a matter of time until some Chinese companies become customers for my company. We already have Korean clients. :teeth

They'll get away with it if they're willing to let their citizens die without treating their pollution caused illness.
The cost of healthcare in the US may stifle economic growth here. Will the Chinese show the world how to make it cost effective?
I assume you're joking about pollution as a means of controlling population growth.

Joking?

No.

They are *ABSOLUTELY* 'willing to let their citizens die without treating their pollution caused illness.'

They have more people than they know what to do with now, and they control the media.

I think the chart of China's economic growth will be like the dotcom bubble chart. You cant totally disregard the necessities of healthy living and expect a good outcome.
Their creating irreparable damage to their environment, this problem won't go away.

I think they're going to have huge protest/riot/revolt issues within the next twenty years.

Recall how the Chinese government closed many factories around Beijing during the 2008 Olympics. Dramatic before and after smog pollution levels. Before the Olympics visibility was 1/4 mile and after five miles. This happened few days after hundreds of factories were shut down during the Olympics.

Fossil and coal fueled factories attribute to the majority of Beijing's pollution. Bet coal scrubber companies would do brisk sales there. :party

During the Olympics they alternated day to day between license plates stsarting with odd or even numbers being allowed to drive that day. One day odd the next day even. And still I remember watching the bicycle road race and looking like they were riding through fog. They were almost invisible unless the camera was up close.

they love the coal!

they are saying china has more shale oil/gas than the US. they lack the tech and know how but they are hiring foreign companies to explore this.

US will not be able to export LNG until 2015. in the meanwhile we just let it burn.

Their life expectancy today is where the US was in 1978...and it's still creeping up...but for how long?

they loved the cigarettes there. air pollution is not enough.
