Hanging heavy boxing bag outside under eaves?

I have about a 2 feet of overhang I think and want to hang a 80lb heavy bag. Is this wise? Will the bag withstand being outside? Its leather/vinyl.

Will the roof take the beating?


I havent been able to find a pull up bar one side and heavy bag stand on the other side type device on craigslist. Lots of solo heavy bags and dip/pull bar stands. Suppose I could weld/bolt a arm on the back side of a pull/dip station to hang the bag.

I don't know about your situation but I remember having a bag hanging in the garage to the support beams. When I would go at it the entire house would shake and it really pissed off my parents. The same thing might happen to you as well. If this is just for punching and kicking without any amount of footwork then I would get a self hung bag or even those water filled POS bags since it will be outside. You can always throw a garage bag over it when it isn't in use.

The pull up bar idea is great but you will have to weight the legs at the base with weights in order to keep it up.

Damn I need to spell check more often! I thought of one other idea, a bob! Those are the heavy bags in the shape of well, Bob. They have a pretty good resale value as well cause everyone likes them. Might work....

As for the bag. I have a 80lb ready to be hung. No space in the garage unless I want to hook and unhook every time to use it. I figured outside and wrap it with a tarp when done. The pull up station isnt necessary but a nice addition and would be a solid workout....boxing, jump rope, pull ups/dips, rinse repeat for a few rounds.

You hang something like that off the outside of your house and the HOA will be in touch as soon as they see it. Guaranteed.

Plus, it's a really bad idea to hang it where you're thinking. Weight-wise is sketchy enough, but it won't just be a static load. You'll tear things to pieces.

As has been said, it'll shake the living shit out of everything. Your roof wasn't designed to support that kind of load. Get a free-standing...... stand.

i have a 120 pound thai bag hanging from a swivel directly tied to the ceiling joists and it doesn't transmit into the structure very noticeably.

the trick is to use a spring between the mount and the bag...that said, it's gonna wind up full of mold even if you wrap it in a tarp.

I have a couple of heavy bag stands. Try looking at Play it Again Sports. I got both of mine for free from friends. But I was looking at them at PAS and they had them pretty cheap.

80 lb bag? you better have it anchored down or get someone to hold it. unless you have no pop whatsoever, that little shit will be flying all over the place. also, keeping it outside, don't expect it to last long.

no problem. the eaves are designed for at least 150lb/sq-ft snow load so an an 80lb bag is nothing. momentum and inertia are nothing on such a light mass. also, i'm sure the hoa won't care as long as it looks like a christmas decoration, can't mess with religious decorations afterall. i'd be more worried about shredding the bag with your fists of fury than any mold or sun damage the exterior will be subject to.

How about a stack of tires with three posts inside to keep it straight. You could drill hole in the tires so if water gets in it would drain.
