Too Big for a Miata - What Are Some Good Options?

Fwiw, the 98-02 T/A WS6 stuff is really good for the price. Easy to work on, great power, cheap mods...and the coup de Gracie? Values going the other way on them now...

Hey, quit trying to infect everyone with your gas guzzling, rubber burning taste in cars! :twofinger :laughing

(yes, the SS would be cool but the missus would absolutely *kill* me)

Yeah, but sometimes..it's worth it! I'm a total Hescher in disguise...

a Saab 900 convertible.

it fits a 6'7" person.

nowadays the newer model is a Saab 9-3 convertible, I guess.

And as we know the Saabs are an Opel (second most-selling German car)

if you don't like that GM product.. I guess you could always go with the Vette..wait..

BTW I can't see why nobody STOPPED short of recommending you a 350Z .. how non-Divine of them ;)

I've been researching the 510's and was amazed at how expensive they have gotten. I blame Adam Carolla and the fact that he won't stfu about his BRE on his podcast. Looks like I won't be reliving my youth anytime soon.

jay leno featured one on his web series thing as well. the entire vintage japanese segment has gone nutters in the last 5-10 years.... and by nutters i mean they're worth about 10k to the right nugbag

Always wanted one of these....

Aside from the mechanicals of the later Saab, they're neat cars...not a biad idea.

The 350Z is well out of the price point, for a good one...and if you're gonna buy a shitty high mile car, just rent, IMO..

Like the Vette idea, but the good ones seem out of the price point. $10K doesn't buy much these days...hence the Solstice and Miata being about the only things out there.

Here is a list of stupid options that might move you:

1997 Jaguar: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/ctd/4089349047.html

Believe it or not, I like the *idea* of the Jag. Don't know if I'd like the reality of it.

Yeah, I've had one of those. An 87 900S. I had an 85 900S sedan that was one of the best cars I've ever owned. My 87 convertible was one thing after another. I like Saabs anyway.

A 350z will come in well ahead of a vette of similar vintage as prices go. Aiming for 07-08' model 350s will be on the expensive side. The smart money says get the stick shift 06 350 (one that has had the clutch replaced preferably). Even the base models net the higher horsepower DE version motor (300+hp 6 spd only), nice 18" wheels and virtually all the parts interchangability with 2003+ models.

Z's are kinda heavy for the category, but for god sake, don't get a boxster. For similar cheddar you can get a faster Z that handles nearly as well and will start everytime to get into it. I almost bought a Boxster and I thank baby jesus everyday I snapped out of the "I'd like to have/drive a Porsche" phase.

Is that a race car versious of the TR 1/8th abortion? Triumphs' attempt to give you a car without the trouble of having to drive it spontaneously aborted it's ability to drive after 20 easy miles of breaking in?

That Triumph?
:laughing

Sounds like you'd be happier with rear wheel drive...though, like you we owned a mid 80's 900 which was a great car and then a gorgeous 900S convertible that was an absolute maintenance nightmare unlike the Sedan.

I think the Convertibles unlike the Sedans were assembled in Finland.

"Finland is considered a country of hard drinking people. Alcohol became a sad statistic in 2006 of becoming the number 1 cause of death for men and a close second for women in Finland. Figures for 2005 released by the state statistics agency showed alcohol killed more people aged 15 to 64 than cardiovascular disease or cancer."

It's a Fiat X 1/9.

That XK8 isn't a bad idea, but I'm not up on that generations issues...I do know a guy who can tell you all about them and has his own Jag shop out here, if that helps Kurt. +1 on Dave's suggestion for sure...they're regal cars for sure.

That car is worth no more than $12K. regular XK's are well into the $9K range (99-2000) with about 70K miles or so. The market hates those cars for some reason...but they're drop dead gorgeous. Our 2007 XKR convertible gets more comments than any car I've had, bar none. And we've had one problem with the "T" for the windshield wipers breaking, which we fixed in an hour over the weekend with a trip to Oreilly parts.

My worry would be if you ever need to get out of one of those earlier ones. There's a glut of them in the marketplace...but if you're gonna keep it awhile as a second car, would be a great choice (after I found out if that gen 1 has any issues).

Ok substitute Triumph for Fiat, the result stays the same!

I just can't get over the Triumph my buddy had in high school. His stepfather purchased it for him and it was one of the worst modern cars I ever recall being in.

The Triumph is totally different car, I think you mean the TR8 or whatever, that had some sort of GM or Rover V8 in it.

As for Jag's......not exactly a great handler. And any used one that costs 10K or less is likely to require 5K of work within the first year, lulz.

Plenty of 2000-2005ish Mustang GT convertibles out there for <$10k. Could probably find a '67 Z28 Camaro for ~$10k (the SS will be far more).

I had a Mr2 spyder that i bought new and used as a commuter. I put 230,000 miles on it before I gave it to my son. He is almost 6'2'' and fits fine in it. He doesn't fit in a miata.
