Do you wear a watch?

Havent worn a watch in almost 15 years but this one has caught my interest for the past several months but I havent been able to justify buying one. Has a map and compass type feel to it, like I am going to go look for the edge of the planet:rofl

But no seriously, watches are basically like jewelry these days considering all these electronics that have the time on them. I've never been a big necklace/watch/ring/earring type of guy.

I normally do not wear watches. I wore a Daytona for 3 years and 3 people commented on it: Billswim, Berto's dad, and a BMW salesman. Why wear a nice watch if people don't notice?

I'm in a different category than most of you as I'm a watch dealer. I really appreciate a nice watch, and the functionality of a non expensive functional watch also. However, the most accurate and frankly convenient timepiece I own is my iPhone. Go figure.

These 3 are my favorites from my personal collection ( AKA "I won't be selling these anytime soon"):

Not in the Bay Area!:laughing

In the secondary market these watches trade for 1/2 - 1/3 the MSRP. You can see why I'm a little disillusioned with luxury watches: Brand new these watches cost a lot. If you met me, and if I were wearing one, you might get the wrong idea about the type of person I am. I'm not materialistic. Money doesn't bring happiness, and a fine timepiece doesn't need to cost $50,000.

I bid on another Patek just the other day whose MSRP is $99,900. Fucking crazy money just for a mass produced watch.
 
I only wear my watch when I wear a suit.

It's a pretty nice black face Bulova with diamonds where the numbers would be.

It's just an accessory like a pocket square or tie bar. It stopped working years ago and I don't care to fix it.

Yeah, if your primary purpose for wearing a super expensive Paneri, Patek, or whatever is to show off how much money you have? Why risk someone not knowing how much the watch cost...just laminate your bank statement and wear it on a neck lanyard.

Yea I think I discovered that lesson with the Daytona. Nobody really gives a shit how much money you make, and those that do give a shit probably won't make good friends.

And I don't care to wear a watch because I know I'm going to sell it later, and don't want to scratch my investment.

I do, however, know what the watch you're wearing is worth (in the market at least). And if I like you, I'll compliment you. And if I don't like you, I'll tell everybody else what a douche nozzle you are for wearing an expensive watch:laughing Just kidding I really don't care either.
 
Amazingly, I bought my Submariner back when a Rolex was thought to be the two tone Datejust and nobody recognized mine for what it was.

I liked it that way. Damn things are among the toughest watches on the planet.

These days I wear a Yacht-Master and it's the same deal, nobody recognizes it.

I fix appliances, never take it off, beat it like a rented mule, it looks like it did when I bought it 11 years ago.

In the beginning there is price, in the end there is cost. Buy right the first time and you don't have to do it twice.

My Submariner is still like new, bought it in 82.

I loved your Daytona! You're much braver than I. I won't post pics of my collection and mine pales in comparison. :hail

I have a few. I wear my submariner every day. I dive with it. I swim with it. I use it when I grill. It's been on the racetrack with me, oops. I even water skied with it on until some jerk made me take it off :laughing I've climbed cliffs with it on and jumped off those cliffs. My favorite ad from the 70s was in smithsonian magazine of some guy spelunking with his rolex on. For me, it's a part of me.

All my other watches mark a specific time/place in my life when I got them. I wear them on occasion but always come back to the stainless steel submariner from the 70s.
