Increase your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage Now

No. The way CSL works is like this. If you have 500K that is all you have for the whole accident. That includes property damage and liability. Non of this will be used for you. This is all a 3rd party insurance.

Hey Josh, first off, thanks for stepping in to try an explain some of this insurance murky water to us. Second, I assume from the image below my CSL quote has both $500k CSL for liability ( for the other party ) and a separate $500k CSL for my self and my property incase of UM/UIM. Is that still not the case ?

That is correct but remember your UM/UIM will only kick in if you know who the other driver is. Also add a little medical to the policy.

I have 100/300 UM coverage with my GEICO policy but the company won't let me go higher. Anyone have a policy with higher UM coverage than 100/300?

HOLY SHIT! I just checked with my insurance and USAA makes it to where you UIM is equal to your Bodily Injury Liability amount. I just changed mine to 1Mil/1Mil from 100/300 and my monthly premiums only increased by $12/month. Now I have more liability insurance as well as a ton of UIM. Click for larger image.

Thanks Arch for the life lesson here. Sorry it came at your expense.

Whoa whoa whoa

USAA doesnt cover motorcycles. I tried to get coverage for my bike but it directs me to progressive. Is there some secret your not telling me?

Depending who the company is they can put a cap on your UM/UIM coverage.(each company is different) you also cant have higher UM/UIM then your primary liability limits.

USAA contract MC policies through Progressive.

This is true but you can add UM/UIM to a umbrella policy but it is about the same price and the umbrella without it.

Except that umbrella policies specifically exclude motorcycles from UM/UIM as opposed to cages.

I actually just did the switchover yesterday partly in response to this thread.

To cover MCs directly through USAA, you must 1) have your M endorsement for over 3 years and 2) have a car insured through USAA. I didn't have a car on my policy until recently (I now insure my GFs car on my policy) so this was not possible. They also do not offer this in all states, but do in CA.

I significantly increased all my levels of coverage including UIM and it is still less than I was paying via Progressive. The only tradeoff I encountered is you cannot get USAA roadside assistance coverage for bikes. But the price difference is large enough that unless I am getting towed a couple times a year I will still save money.

I tried increasing my liability to 300/300 but GEICO still limited my UM to 100/300. Odd. This being California, GEICO probably understands all too well where the big claim will be coming from.

Not true. Not all companies will exclude a MC on a umbrella. If you have the correct underlying limits on the MC and you list it on the umbrella policy it will be covered. The thing with the umbrella is that you have to list everything on it or it will not be covered.

Just got off the phone with GEICO and increased by UM/UIM on my autos from $50,000/$100,000 to $300,000/$500,000. For all four cars on our policy, including two teenage drivers, the total premium increase was only $70 a year. Should have done that a long time ago.

I had $100,000/$300,000 UIM on my motos, but it was worthless in this accident.
