Elmood Cafe in Berkeley - Breakfast with a side of Racism

I respect everyone's right to be a complete racist dickwad in this country. They should be allowed to only serve whoever the fuck they want.

Fuck them over with your wallet, by not buying anything and the problem will sort itself out. They wont be in business for too much longer.

They've been around a long time and this isn't really a huge stain on the place.

So you went to a douchey cafe... then got douche service :laughing

ps. Go to Rick and Ann's by the Claremont for future reference.

This. Rick and Ann's rocks, the food is awesome. Ditto Betty's Ocean View.

What irks me is the high horse attitude. Everybody knows wait work might as well be called slavery; they work like crazy, put up with shit, and get paid practically nothing. And everybody knows the difference between wait work and being a bum is one or two missed paycheques. So why treat bums with so much disdain when you're just a step above them?

Marcus, I know a couple of waiters that make at least twice the money I do, they are far from the bottom wrung, and pretty far from slaves, but this is also far from the norm for wait staff.

And why treat bums with so much disgust? Because they are bums and they choose the life they have. Fuck bums.

Im pretty sure the guy with the blog looks at everything, everything and everyone that he comes across in daily life, and asks himself, "Is this racist?" I know people like that, that look for racism/homophobia/anti-semitism in everything they do, and they usually find it, even if they have to make shit up. Depending, obviously, on whether they are gay, a minority of some sort, or Jewish. Frankly, I've got more important shit to worry about, than how somebody thinks. After all, my bike needs tires. My truck needs tires. My dog has fleas. Very important shit indeed.

And you're not even joking. You mean it. Good vibes and wishes you never find yourself in ANOTHER bind.

Is it not racist to treat people differently because of their race? So that poses the question, are people, or at least white people, supposed to treat someone who is black with more respect than they would otherwise treat any other person?

So if one worked in a restaurant with outside seating, presumably in a location that would experience a fair amount of outsiders walking up and bothering patrons while they ate, let's say the normal reaction from a busy server would be to give them a somewhat rude "get lost" sign.

So, is it the expected cultural standard in this country to first assess the race of the person, and if that person happens to be black, is it expected that they be treated differently? More politely? Is it considered extra important that black people are not offended, than people of any other race?

While the rightly-so offended patron cried "text book racism", it wasn't really racism. It rather was the classic case of someone thinking too highly of herself and shooting before asking questions, and further digging her heels in shit instead of issuing a heartfelt apology. May that be a lesson to some around here.

I've been called and treated as the mover, carwash guy, busboy, janitor, driver, Jehovah Witness, shelter resident, etc. Nothing wrong with those professions/activities, but it's condescending as shit. When in doubt, start by treating the person in front of you as your boss.

Marcus, Marcus, Marcus. No, I'm not joking. One thing though. Every bind I've ever been in, was brought on by myself. Jail, living in my truck, living on friends couches, strung out on dope, nobodies fault but mine. I've been there. I've known a bunch of these guys. The great majority of them, have put themselves exactly right where they are. A small percentage of them have mental issues. But the rest? Why should I feel for them? They're adults. They know why they are where they are. Apparently, it isn't worth the effort to get up and go to work. The counties will give them something, so will some individuals. It's easy to get some booze or dope when people will give you money.

What does it have to do with...

Fuck bums.

:wtf

Sure, motioning and knocking on the window is rude, but if she was correct in her assessment, and it was a guy bothering patrons by trying to sell something table side, so what?

But what's more, when she came out because the guy hadn't left, if it was even the same person, and she found out she made a mistake, she did apologize several times. Why wasn't it heart felt? Because she was embarrassed and didn't make eye contact? Because she didn't admit it was racist motivated?

IDK, it just reads like the guy is making a significant racial issue out of a very minor misunderstanding. Life is 10% what happens to you that's out of your control and 90% how you react to it.

Agreed, he's making this situation into a "text book racism" and it isn't.

Even if she was correct, she's still someone with no business in the hospitality industry. As a patron, I don't want negative shitty energy around my meals. But she was in the wrong, and her apology was "I thought you were a bum [because you're carrying a laptop and a book and are black and talking to white women]. Condescending shit as it gets.

I made a joke on the long drive back from Vegas about all the bad drivers we crossed: "It is not profiling if I am right". btw, my guesses of the drivers' ethnicity were about 50% right.

If the waitress had recognized correctly this man was not a bum but the woman's husband who was just sitting there, there would be no story.

Part of the problem is that there are a lot of black bums in this area, and the waitress made him feel like one. I was thinking if this was, let's say Aspen or Park City, no one would think a black man outside a sidewalk cafe is a bum. They would probably think he was a rich dude.

Instead Bell was treated like a bum and then made to feel like he was at fault.

I can understand how Bell feels the way he does because people have ignorantly grouped me as the wrong race or off the boat.

It is a weird one because yes I am insulted but no the person wasn't intending on being nasty. In some ways it is worse, because I have to have a sense of humor about this person's stupidity, instead of saying, "You ignorant piece of shit!"

So do you have an opinion on this?

Didn't she actually say, " Oh, we thought you were selling something "? Seems like a reasonable assumption, since he didn't come in and get seated with the women, he was standing up in front of the table, and he was showing them a book he just bought.

Not only that, but she didn't come outside yelling, the author said she actually stood there, took in the situation, they explained the situation, she realized her error, and apologized. I've seen worse conduct from service employees. I think if I was in the author's circumstances, I'd probably be annoyed by the knocking and gestures to leave, but I think I'd quickly put it behind me after an apology and explanation. It wouldn't matter to me what the race of the server was. It would never occur to me that it was anything racist. But then I'm a white guy so I guess I just don't understand.

Why are you saying white guys are stupid? Racist.

Why are you saying men can't understand? Misandrist.

Why are you calling the waitstaff "servers"? So derogatory. Classist.

At least there wasn't a desmosedici ruining his hash browns.

:laughing

All I'm saying is, at the Waffle House you can only order one variety of waffle, but you can get 1,000 varieties of hash browns.

Some people see certain things everywhere.

I know you look for potential threats when you're working, and I certainly don't "get it". To me you just sound paranoid. But then again, I ain't a cop-what do I know?
