The agricultural industry is not going to like this one when the report is officially released.
Maybe the risks of eating meat are no surprise but I've never heard it being compared to smoking and asbestos before.

The World Health Organisation is expected to issue new guidelines warning that processed meat products such as bacon and sausages are a cancer risk on the scale of smoking and asbestos.

Hope this'll put a stop on all the assclowns who keep saying "bacon this......bacon that.....moar bacon plz". Shit is so 2002. We get it, you like bacon. That's hardly a novel opinion.

:applause

Also, stoked that I don't eat meat unless I kill it myself. No preservatives in the miniscule amount of fish that ends up inside me... mercury, yeah, probs getting some of that...

This is all over the news today, and I haven't seen a single goddam article that explains why.

I assume when the report is released, it will point the finger at N-nitrosamines, which are by products of curing. These molecules and can "add" themselves to molecules like DNA, leading to gene damage.

N-Nitrosamines are all over the environment. Humans have lived on cured meats before the written word even existed. They'll need to pry my bacon from my cold, dead hands.

Thanks for the info - why are they lumping hamburger in with the cured meat list?

Yes, we've been told that red meat is bad for some time, but is it really on par with chemical-laden processed stuff?

Hmm, good question...hamburger may be in there for their heterocyclic amine content, which are byproducts of cooking. Anytime you eat a nicely browned piece of meat, you are eating heterocyclic amines. Also carcinogenic.

It's always hard to "compare" toxicity. The level of risk depends on so many factors including degree of exposure, route of exposure, age, nutritional status, gender, metabolic profiles...

I personally stay away from artificial ingredients, even though they are regarded as safe in concentrations found in the food we eat. I figure that we have evolved over millennia to metabolize and tolerate toxins like biomass smoke, N-nitrosamines, heterocyclic amines, etc. We haven't evolved around FD&C Yellow #5.

I'm so over all this nanny bullshit all under the guise of making us "safer" and "reducing health care costs". Fuck this shit. Life is dangerous. Freedom is dangerous. You want to live like a battery from the Matrix? be my guest. I'll have 4x4 double bacon dead cow burger.

The report says processed meats.......not just cured meats.

"Processed" means it contains a slurry of bullshit you don't want. Not just artificial ingredients, but also "meat by-products" like organ meats, hoofs, nostrils, brains, rectum, whatever the fuck they want to put in it.

Processed meats include bologna, salami, McNuggets, and non-premium hot dogs. Only dumbasses buy those things, because for only a couple dollars more they could get 100% pure ham, turkey, beef or whatever.

Yeah, all you fuckin pansies wanting to live until 60 or 70 without colon cancer, what the fuck is up with that weak-ass outlook on life? Corporate America wouldn't poison you for profit, that's a bunch of tin-foil bullshit.
I miss the good ol' days when you could use asbestos in construction and didn't have to strap kids in car seats, amirite?

It's okay, I'll wash it down with a Coke, I read somewhere they're good for you! :thumbup

Back before the pussification of America, these were considered meat products, not meat by-products.

I highly doubt this report is going to point any fingers at artificial additives.
