Aerostich R3 or Classic for more waterproofness?

I've had a two piece roadcrafter for ten years now. Its been great but getting worn down so I ordered a new one Sunday. Now I'm thinking about changing the order to an R3 but looks like it's only available in one piece. Wondering if it will be any better

Did you see the two piece in our classifieds?

Might fit you? (Since I've met you. :laughing )

My gear is worn daily, and often worn hard. I have not seen this "direct wear on the Gore-tex" being discussed here, and I wonder if the issue is simply that the waterproofing needs to be refreshed. The fabric needs to be kept clean for the waterproofiness to be waterproofy. Occasional Techwash treatment keeps everything hunky-dory—and less stinky—for me. Yeah, you lose that "look at me in my dirty 'Stich, I'm so hardcore" street cred. Waah. Go ride.

This is also true, for the classic Stich's it is very important to keep them 'refreshed' with a good washing with the correct waxy stuff.

Reminds me, I have to buy some more wash and junk.

My R3 with the forward rotated sleeves and ellipse in the back feels great while in full tuck on my supermoto.

The one piece is so convenient. I don't dread having to get geared up anymore.

I've been using an aerostich back protector but not familiar with the Ellipse. Is that an Aerostich item or another brand?

I have an R3 and a two-piece Classic. In my experience, the R3 is the best—the gutters around the zippers are better, and mine's been flawlessly waterproof in daily use. There are other nice updates, like the collar magnets.

Mine has pretty much leaked in the crotch since day 1 and I've done all the proper Nikwax treatments/wash/sprays too.

I actually took photos of where it's wearing down in the shoulders/neck/back/elbows/knees on the inside two days ago to send to Aerostich to see if this is normal or not. I didn't even realize just how much wear was happening until now actually although I had seen it in the shoulders several months ago.

I just got back from being on the road for the last three months and it's super awesome riding all day long in the rain and then finally going into a place, taking off the stich and being mostly dry except for in the crotch.....really impresses people! :laughing

Still, it's not like I'm wearing super abrasive clothing underneath..... unless cotton t-shirts/jeans/shorts and merino wool long underwear are considered abrasive?

I have question for all you Stitch users. When I see pictures of folks wearing these one piece suits, the shins and knees look snug but the arms look very baggy and lose. How much play dues your upper body arm have? Does it feel like it would stay in place?

I can't speak for others, but having once been the unfortunate victim of an 80yr old left hand turner, and consequently doing the asphalt shuffle, I can say with certainty the 1pc roadcrafter armor points stayed put during a rather violent test of suit's manufacture.

If you're seriously considering a 'Stich, go over to Advrider and search around. The subjects been hashed to death.

I just got my R3 back from Aerostich which they repaired for free and also covered the shipping both ways. I found 3-4 locations where the Velcro from the Aerostich back protector had been rubbing the suite and worn through the two inner 'layers' and then into the outer Courdura fabric. They simply applied seal tape over the wear areas. I've since 'defeated' the outer edges of the Velcro on the back protector and along with the hopefully more durable seam tape I'll be good to go for awhile. The R3 is about 18 months old with about 20k miles on it. It's cooler than my original suit and is awesome in warm humid temps. In cooler weather I just layer and use electrics.

I've had my R3 for about 3 years and use it for daily commuting, with occasional breaks to wear a "Classic" suit that I have.

My R3 DOES have some torn Gore-Tex in the crotch, on the Leg zipper only side. I got some Gore-Tex repair stuff for it, so I'll see how it works.

Man, this is really disappointing to hear about the R3.

@NB0tt: do you mind sharing the pictures of the worn down areas?

Oh yeah, I had that too, but only a pea sized spot when I noticed it. Adjusted the velcro, and all good now.

Thanks st4. That's pretty bad. It almost looks like it got burned from heated gear or something.

So it sounds like getting a 'stich is hit or miss. Really disappointing; I'd be able to convince myself that it's worth the premium cost it if the quality wasn't questionable.
