Town Hall Meeting and Riding 9 / 84 & 35 -- REPORT / Heads up!!!!!!!

Thanks for this, Bud.

For myself, several years ago I swore off riding the SC mountains on the weekends when the weather is good. Bluntly, it was the behavior of other riders that put me off, so I'm not surprised that the locals aren't happy about it. That doesn't mean that I think they're completely in the right, but I understand their motivation.

What can we do to influence the behavior of our own?
The behavior is not just on the weekends. I frequently see and hear groups of cars heading up 9 on weekday evenings. In the last few months I've seen cars hauling ass on 9 at 5am. McLaren, Ford GT350, GR Corollas, Toyobarus, Miatas, E36 BMW's, Caymans, etc.

The residents were not grouping all motorcyclists together, same goes for cars.

speaking as someone who will never be accused of being an ambassador of the sport, I’m here to offer the perspective that I’m constantly being grouped. :laughing

glad to hear I’m wrong about feeling that I’m treated that way, and I am grateful to those of you who take the time to engage in the process. :thumbup

Lol....you sound like the 1%er biker dude that's all pissed off because he just got profiled by the Safeway clerk. :laughing
...but I get it.....I honestly do....

I mostly get profiled by LE and locals, who I suspect take one look at my ragged moto-gear/poor personal hygiene act and think “homeless guy!” :laughing

anyway.

at the risk of making too fine a point, there’s no satisfying local’s complaints, short of simply being wished away. that’s their pov, ime. :ride

I'm sure that's true, but my experience has been that I am more likely to find an oncoming motorcyclist in my lane as I approach a lefthand bend on weekends during the summer than on a Tuesday in February. My judgment is based on my experience.

I wasn't trying contradict you Kurt. I was attempting to provide additional information.

The prospects of improving the road surface while simultaneously reducing the speed limit makes me shed a tear.

For those of us who don’t live up there, it’s worth remembering that we have fewer opportunities to witness bad behavior than residents do. We also have more options to pick and choose when we go up there, or whether we go at all. I can emphasize with people who live there and deal with the noise and potential hazards.

I’m sure it’s a nasty shock for the newbie and/or shouting-at-clouds locals … like my friends who buy next to airports or racetracks.

in any event, we’ll all alway have potholes to complain about. thank goodness.

plus, thanks for banging on the “if we go up there at all” drum, as a reminder of the low level harassment game that’s being played. speaking of who we empathize with, perhaps. :laughing :angel

Do those cars attract as much attention as a liter bike with racing pipes?

Like everything else it's a matter of perspective sometimes a small percentage of a perceived group can drive the perspective.

What exactly is your angle here? All I see is a bunch of passive aggressive bullshit.

Is it your position that residents don’t have a valid complaint?

We gotta ride over ther and just what the hype is about. Nah, too scary to ride. The McLaren?
Seriously, it would be nice if we could rein in the behavior of our… brethren? And the roadies? I dunno?

The wild packs of reckless drifter clowns come quickly to mind.
A much larger threat, imo...but I’m admittedly biased

Yes.

I have reached out to the CHP and to Assembly Member Berman. I have some ideas to share and questions as well.

:thumbup

yes, I’m rejecting their premise.

here’s my premise, briefly restated from post #7:

“was there any pushback on the questionable premise that the area is routinely treated as “a race track”?

“as an example of what my mild point is (that the residents of the area just wish that people like me never go into “their” neighborhoods), here’s a single year of Hwy 17 stats:

Annual Fatalities & Collisions on Highway 17
• 2025: 606 total collisions, 222 injury collisions, and 5 fatal collisions.

“so, comparable with the stats the locals had to go back five years to accrue? :dunno

“the other mild point I’d make is that the CHP knows that it’s mostly a NIMBY issue, because if things were truly, statistically, out of hand, they wouldn’t be trying to address the issue by obtaining grants for increased enforcement?

“iow, imo, the CHP is simply making an effort to be seem as being responsive to the complaints of the locals?”

and the other point I’d make, now, (which also supports my mild premise) is to recall the story Mr budman told in post #1 about how he was treated in the meeting by LE, or whoever, when he was doing what he does, because he’s awesome (showing up irl and representing), and was handing someone his card, and was not treated very well, imo, until he had to do a secret LE handshake and drop some names, and only then felt like he was able to make a better connection.

be that as it may … thanks for calling me on my “passive aggressive bs.” as you know, I defer to you in all matters of BARF comportment and try to follow your example wrt empathy, which always appears so very proper and well placed.

when I grow up I hope to put aside passive, and simply come across as aggressive—but clearly I have work to do in that regard. :laughing :ride

Just to be clear John.

I was treated fine. The card and information on my Moto Safety life did seem to increase the acceptance that I was serious about wanting to help.

sure, your card exchange story went well, cuz you’re you. :thumbup

my point in bringing it up is someone like me would have had trouble getting past the usual initial “oh here’s the problem, personified” reaction of citizens and the powers that be.

it was that you had extra steps to do to get to “increased acceptance,” that tends to be beyond most motorcycle people, ime? beyond me, anyway. :clown
