Here's the problem. Everything was fine until last week all of a sudden. My '01 Yamaha R6 stalls. Only at stop signs or while the bike is at a complete stop. Idle is below 1k rpm during those period.

Changed oil & oil filter Nov '10, just changed spark plugs 2 days ago, replaced stator Oct '10, adjust the idle on the right side of the bike clockwise, cleaned out the air filter.

Now that I've changed out the spark plugs (thinking that was the problem) & took it out for a test ride earlier, the rpm seems to be studdering every 5 seconds while warming up & stopped. Jumping up and down anywhere between 1300rpm - 1800rpm. And sometimes during a complete stop, the rpm would rev up to about 3500rpm on its own.

I was told to put some fuel cleaner like STP in the fuel (which I did) and run it maybe 2-3 tanks & sees if it gets better. Would that help? Some also said that I have to take out the carb and clean some parts in there. Really?

What else could be the problem? I want to try most other things before taking out the carb because I'm a newbie and want to make sure I do it right.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thks all!

Thks a lot mototireguy. Your post and replies are always helpful.

Looking thru the link you gave me, it's most likely the ignition coils like you said. But most of their post are around year 2002+. I would change the coils myself happily if that IS the problem (Lot better than taking the carb apart).

Do you really think that could be the problem? Or can you think of anything else that might have cause the problem I'm having?

Check the battery too. You wouldn't believe it but my new to me aprilia, was stalling like that after 2 hours at the shop the conclusion was the battery even though it tested fine and started the bike every time.

Yeah. I've checked the battery yesterday already & it tested fine. And it's a new battery I got last Sept., right after I replaced the stator because the bad stator was draining it.

Any other idea?

To mototireguy: I just checked with a dealer, there is no recall on '01 R6.

Check for loose wires or bad connectors.

I'm out of other ideas but this could be because I ride a Honda. :teeth

on the right side of the bike, around the middle fairing, theres a knob that adjusts the idle...play with that and set the idle so where it doesnt stall

Tried that many a times already. rpm still flaps up & down.

Another possibility is some carb vacuum hose could be blocked or leaking.

Other background questions. How many miles on the bike, when was the last time the bike had a carb sync or valve adjust/check?

The bike has about 24k miles on it. I bought this bike last May, so I'm not sure if the previous owner ever had the carb sync and/or valve adjust. And I haven't done it myself.

Try to see if the kick stand safety switch is somehow damaged. I know it only happens when stopped but the switch may just be affected when stoppd.. Other than that, vacume lines are a great place to check... Other than that, thinking that if its CARB, the float is blocked or something to do with the idle setup, maybe not getting fuel when the rps go back down. sounds like a crack in a vacume line tho, but good way to check or slim down the possibilities is to find out where exactly it stalls out... like 1000rpm or 1500 and so on. that way you mite be able to eliminate other things. also when testing that way, try and listen for when it starts to run crappy.. duno if it helps but figured id give you some ideas

Might be a good idea to start with these important, overdue and probably never done maintenance items.

I was thinking of that also. Guess I'll have to take apart the bike to check and clean all the vacuum hose from slim and other gunk. Just checked on maybe changing the ignition coils also. PRICEY!!!!! I'll check on the kick stand switch also, tighten it...loosen it...whatever I have to do.

Thks!

My old r6 would do that when the valves started getting out of adjustment. I'd start there.

How did you fix the problem you had? Were you able to adjust the valves yourself? If so, how did you do it? If not, did you have to end up bringing it to the shop?

Thks

+1

Valve check/adjust interval is officially at 26k.. so might as well get it over with. :thumbup

Thks all.

Think I'll start by replacing all 4 ignition coils first, and use fuel cleaner in my next few tank, then run it for maybe 100 miles to see how it runs first. If all fails, I'll have someone adjust the valves and carb sync it for me.
