03 wr450 cam journal issue

Just take it all to them and let them get fingers on them and they will tell you exactly what is needed or not.
Internet mechanics and photos have gone as far as they can.
Let the pros hold them and check them out and get it over with.

There's something going on there, I don't think it is cam holder bolts. More like old oil or the motor got too hot.

Could be, but there is a lot out there on the internetz about this exact thing happening to YZs and WRs of this generation.

Quick synopsis of the internet search:

A: torque specs are critical to the cam caps, especially with these motors. It was the first time I pulled the caps, but I had to put a solid hit on each to get them to break.

B: the oiling system may be a bit light on the intake cam. According to 1 shop that works on these heads, its the last to get oil.

Engine dynamics hasnt gotten back to me yet, but after considering the potential of lowering the cams and the limit of what they can clean up with machining down is .001". I found a used head off a running yzf450. I am going to install the wr450 exhaust cam and run it.

I am going to take a real close look at the oil paths to make sure they are flowing as best as they can.

I really appreciate all the information that was shared. Everytime i go through the Garage, I get a little bit smarter.

I thought that the exhaust cam was the same other than timing, and a very common upgrade on WRs was to swap it to YZ timing

The YZ cam is the common swap. The YFZ is a bit different (Typo in the previous post). Built to lug a small car around. With this head, I will have the option to mess with it. But, I am going to start out with the feel that I know to make sure the bike is running again.

I interpreted your statement of YZF450 as meaning YZ450F rather than YFZ450

you got a quad head? are the ports the same?

Yeah, constant oil changes. I haven't dropped the oil yet, but I will post on it's status. I run full synthetic 10-40 in all the bikes.

And the quad used the same motor for 4-5 years. It has been super useful as those guys wreck them left and right! :)

Yeah, I don’t even want to start thinking about this... kibble white supposedly makes steel replacements. Who needs titanium anyways.....

On a serious note, has anyone converted ti valves to steel? Horror stories, or can it work?
Damn near everybody who isn't a high level racer replaces thumper valves with SS and just stays away from the rev limiter.

Thank you all for the contributions. The bike is reassembled and I am going through the break in period.

I ended up sourcing a head from Amazon. It came off a YZF450 quad. I got the highest of their options. Refurbished, using all oem parts. Guaranteed to match OEM specs. Time will tell. After receiving the head, I had to swap the cylinder and exhaust studs and the exhaust cam (the intake is identical).

While waiting on the head, I decided to send the cylinder off for replating and ordered an OEM piston and rings. I chose Power Seal USA for the work. They did a very fine job. No complaints and I don't have anything to compare them to. They guarantee their work for a year. Slow turn around, but I was not in a hurry.

I bolted everything up, started her, and have a couple break in cycles.

At the moment this post goes up, the project has been a success. I will update if anything changes....

Another huge thank you for all the feedback!

James

I happen to be going through a similar rebuild and have a less extreme case of gouging but am going back and forth on an Edco rebuild or a refurbed head. Where did you find a head on amazon?? eBay has been the only real source that I have seen.
