Is there a motorcycle coach who can ride with me on the street to improve my skills? I'm a newbie rider and have done a lot of parking lot (slow speed) courses but really need to improve my road riding skills including riding on twisties.

Z2 Roadrider Course
I think they have a couple other courses that are more advanced as well

I'm not a coach but I just spent the last few months teaching my son the basics. He's got his M1 now and he's done Del Puerto to the Junction as well as Pool Station rd.

Let's grab a cup of coffee and see if I can give you a few tips.

I have coached people before in real world riding, and it can be helpful, but it's nowhere near as consistent and effective as a proper tarmac course. There are many parking lot courses that teach you skills that will improve your road riding, including twisties and even track days.

I'll plug Total Control, since I teach for them. If you are still getting comfortable, but have a handle on the basics, take their Intermediate Riding Course. After that they have two levels of advanced courses. The first class I ever took after MSF (about two years after) was the Total Control ARC and it improved my street riding immensely.

I have done some 1 on 1 coaching. What courses have you completed?

Magician, I've seen all kinds of "street based instructors". None of them have been worth a shit, especially when compared to the formal school environments. At your level, just pick one or two and go them. The things you learn will help you tremendously...learn at the school. Practice on the street, IMO.

+1 on school vs street. While you can learn on the street, it has a lot of variables that a track or range do not. Removing the variables and having a set course allows you to focus on the skills you’re developing and to get lots of repetition in a shorter period.

I would think it would be hard for a street based coach, simply because the coach is burdened personally with all of the issues of riding in general. In essence, watching everything else and not getting creamed by a Prius. How can they give any real attention to the student?

The key to individual coaching when I've done individual coaching is to find out what the student is struggling with and address that issue. Oftentimes that can be addressed in a parking lot. And once it's resolved in a parking lot then go take a low traffic area and practice it on the road at a little bit higher speeds.
So the issue really comes down to the coach being able to diagnose what the student is actually struggling with. Not where you actually teach.

The Z2 classes are worth the investment. Learn on the parking lot and track, apply it to the street.

I know that two of the three that responded are solid as hell CMSP instructors.
1 on one on the street being able to explain what is happening, what to look for and what are you looking for could be invaluable.

OP. Enjoy the course and I am sure you will get a lot out of it but more is better and 1 on 1 with a real pro is a good thing.

Best wishes in your journey. :ride
