If you were paid $1K how long could you live with a 56k modem? (kids, these were the painful old days of getting the internet through your telephone) [telephone, also see landline.]

$1000 isn't enough. Most of my work revolves around the internet I don't think $1000/mo is worth it.

(Internet should be a utility)

I remember downloading the Diablo 1 demo back when we had the 33.6k modem... I'd set it right before going to bed and hope it was done in the morning when I woke up. It was 50 megs :rofl

Lulz Napster over 20 something modem.
Then playing Tribes 2 over 56k.

No problem, I'll just tether from my cell phone. I'm getting 33mbps just sitting here on my couch :thumbup

Fire up the BBS and get the 4 player Doom 2 action going. :banana

Back in the 90s and early 00s, 56k was tolerable because of how much smaller files were and the internet seemed much more simple back then. Now, 56k would struggle to load the most basic web pages. 56k is truly unusable nowadays.

But to answer your question, I'd do it for an equal amount of how much time it would take me to make $1k, which is approximately 5 days

Assuming it was only a temporary thing that lasted a week or less, I'd do it. I can do all my coding locally and just give it to a classmate on a thumb drive.

Websites are much larger these days. The user experience for even simple browsing would be a lot worse than 20yrs ago w a 56k modem.

Yeah - I was thinking that! I remember how great it was when I upgraded to the 1200 baud modem, and then managed to score a 2400 baud modem and thought I was in heaven!
I remember those days.
Remember that you could buy a computer with 640k of ram, a 20meg hard drive, a 14 inch 16 color monitor that showed at 320x200 with a 300 baud modem, all for $3,200?
People these days have no idea what we had to go through back then!
The only real interactive place that you could go to electronically was the dating tree. :laughing

My first computer was a VIC20 with 16kb memory and a tape drive :laughing Man, it was a dog but kept me entertained. Never the less, I had plenty of time to read while loading a game...

I remember having to boot off a 5.25 floppy disk to load DOS into the 16kb of memory then swap out floppy's so I could play a game or use telix.
