5% under invoice (not msrp) how do they do it, why cant a local car dealer do it

You pay tax upon registration, if you register in buying state and then reg in Cali your paying double tax and reg.

I don't think you would get double taxed if you only reg it in Cali.

Shipment from east to west is good deal at $1500, I'm looking at a shipping fee of $4500, and I can't get dealer to budge or allow me to use my own shipper.

Yes $1500 is a decent price. One out of state dealer I talked to is asking $200 for the first 50 miles then $1.5/mile after that. Works out to about $3050. I figure if I fly out and drive back it will cost me $800-1400 depending on if I stay in hotels or with friends along the way. I'm considering shipping. Local dealer who I put an order in with still hasn't shown me a build sheet. I think it's there way of saying we don't want to take orders. Could be the guy I have dealt with is incompetent too but his title is manager so I had hoped that wasn't the case.

And I think someone mentioned having to get the vehicle smog checked before registering it here. I had to do that with my work vehicle. It was sold by a dealer in Indiana. Then shipped here. Finding a smog check that would test a brand new vehicle was a bit of a pain in the ass. I had to call the state and a few other orgs and I kept getting "any smog shop can do it so jeep trying.". I had to contact about 15 different shops before I found one willing to try.

What’s the tax situation when bringing it in? I heard CA has fees, really doesn’t want you buying out of state.

Also, shipping? I was quoted $1600 from Pennsylvania to Here.

There used to be a loophole of buying in another county with a lower sales tax rate to save a few bucks on big ticket items. Not the case with cars anymore. They tax you at your registered county rate.

And to answer your question, let’s say you bought the car in Nevada. If the dealer is nice, I’ve heard they’ll do the tax for you right then and there (based on your CA county sales tax rate), that way if you’re financing you can roll all that tax into the monthly payments as well. And no matter what, you have to pay CA registration when you bring the vehicle here, they can’t do anything for you there. So, you take delivery with a temporary tag, and when you get it home you go to a CA DMV to register it a DMV, then all the sales tax is due if you didn’t pay it already. I’ve seen quite a few expensive cars that were out of state buys. On their registration it has the receipt on it also. It’ll show some crazy numbers there on how much money DMV collected that day.

So I picked up my brand new Tacoma from One Toyota in Oakland for MSRP. No shenanigans or hard sell for other stuff. All the other dealers either didn't have inventory or wanted a mark up of 2-10 grand.

Told you all I’ve been reading horror stories of people having their ordered cars sold out from under them. Just came across this one today and it’s a different spin on it, but it’s along the same lines.

TL;DR A vehicle ordered with a deposit, dealer RDR’s the unit before it’s even arrived at the store, and demands customer finalize payment days/weeks before they can even take delivery, or they lose the vehicle they ordered.

Doesn't sound that crazy to me. A little annoying sure but still offered it up to the guy who ordered it.

Suppose it took a month before you actually got to take it home. If you’re making payments, that’s a whole month you paid for to not even have anything. A month of warranty used up. And possibly other things that may be “first xx days free” like SiriusXM, OnStar, etc, that got eaten up in that time.

When you Retail Delivery Report a vehicle, the clock starts running on all that.

I get it, I'd be irritated, but that's about it.
