5th and 6th gear on literbikes...

You don't need to rev a 1000 to 6-7k on the highway. You should run it in the 3.5-4.5k area. That's what 5th and 6th gear are for. I run mine into 5th and 6th almost every time I'm on the highway.

True for the Mille but the MV F4 will run too hot at lower rpm (6th) and has a rough spot at 5000 (5th gear) but runs nice'n'smooth at 5500-6000 (75mhp in 4th) - it's sweet spot. I don't fight it - I like it :teeth

Yes, but I was watching a video a bit ago where a rider at the track got up to about 180mph BEFORE shifting into 6th and touching 200mph.

I don't think even at the track 6th gear is for me :laughing It is for those who overshadow me :)

Stefan

Your right, I'm only in 6th for a second on the front straight @ T-Hill...

i guess im trying to say that if you are at 10k consistantly, your bike is making more power, so its putting down more torque than it would if it was at 4k RPM's consistantly. *shrug*
If you are making more power, then you are accelerating (until aerodynamics prevent it). If you are holding your speed, then it doesn't matter if you are at 5000 RPM's or 10,000 RPM's.

then you probably don't realize a liter bike has better power to weight than your Busa and can accelerate all the same up to ~ 140. When you break a literbike's lowly top speed of 180 mph with your superior aerodynamics, then you can brag about having a Busa.

So when I out-accelerate the liter bike at 140 while still in 3rd gear, I can brag when I click into 4th? :confused

Var, Brian is bigger than you and will fly out here to beat you up. You'll be lying curled up in a fetal position when he's done with you. :twofinger

:laughing

On the freeway I'm at 74 mph in 6th gear and 4k rpm on the Duc. And I get 42 mpg compared to the 27 mpg reported by the magazines. No lack of power at 4k rpm.

The turn of the century called and wants it's myths and Urban legends back.:x

6th works, but you have to go at least 65 mph.

And it will accelerate HARD past 160 mph, and beyond, but I've always run out of room, so don't know for sure.

I went down 1 tooth in the front and 6th gear is still pretty useless to me. I'll be at 5k rpm (beginning of powerband) in 6th gear at a little over 80mph

The Hayabusa is turning 3500 rpm at 65MPH in 6th... and pulls hard from there! Of course, it's not a literbike.

So it seems like liter bikes have a peaky torque curve, and you would need to downshift to get any power if you're in 6th gear?

I go to 6th gear on my Busa, once I get to cruising speed, be it 40, 55, or 65 mph. There's plenty of torque to break triple digits in about one second, in case I need to avoid a crazed gangbanger. :cool

I once proved to some guys that I could take off from a stop in 6th gear without slipping the clutch or bogging the motor.

On my literbike I stay on 6th on the freeway all the time. It's not one of those hi-tech, new, race replica liter bikes though. Just a sport-touring bike.

6th Gear 65mph 4kRpms
6th Gear 85mph 5krpms

i'm always in 6th on the freeway. 11k rpms

oh, was this conversation restricted to literbikes?

I don't ever use 6th on my 600, and rarely use 5th. I don't use anything but 1st around town. 8000rpm (the slowest speed allowable to have power on tap for passing) is 90mph in 6th, which is faster than i would want to cruise on the freeway.

If I do need/want to go faster than 90mph, then I want to be in the powerband, which, at 90mph, is back down in 2nd. :laughing I've never gone fast enough to use the powerband in anything higher than 3rd, mostly because I've never been to the track.

Based on that, I'm not surprised you find 5/6 on a literbike totally useless.

There was an interesting article in one of those Brit mags (Superbike or Performance Bike, forgot which), where they compared a 600 with a literbike and mapped the throttle positions. On the track, neither the average street rider nor the tester ever used 100% of the 1000's throttle for any appreciable amount of time, IIRC.

Jeff if the above mentioned ever happens , I'll just hit some corners. :twofinger x2

you've got one of those 12 speed gearboxes from 2F2F?

i don't even know how many times i've tried to shift to 7th gear :ride

Hah I used to do it once a ride but then I started paying attention to the rpm in relation to my speed and not just my ear
