Catch Me Man
The 2014 AFM Racing season has come to a close and it was nothing short of a spectacular year. As I reflected on the 2013 season with 3 class championships and a # 6 overall plate, how was I ever going to top that? Simple, insert AP MotoArts and the awesome machinery that he builds. Andy is a fellow racer and tuner with vast knowledge in getting the most out of his machines. When I first test rode one his machines at a track day last November, I was in awe. I have ridden some pretty fast machines but the way the power was came on was nothing short of amazing. I was hooked and wanted to be a part of it. Fast forward to present year. Andy wanted to have the fastest bikes with the fastest lap times for all of AFM. Catching Competition was now joining forces with AP and was ready for the challenge.
One by one records began to fall starting with the opening round at Buttonwillow. 650 Production with a 1.56.539. 650 Twins with a 1.54.854.
On to Sears Point and the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Shootout. After running a 20 lap Sport bike race with a finish of 9th and my first National finish under my belt aboard an AP GSX-R 600.It was time for the support races. 650 Production record (my old one) was set at a 1.46.504
Formula IV was broken with a 1.45.053. I even managed to get a new sponsor Racefuelz.
It would survive until August when in the 650 Twins race I managed a 1.44.632.
Next up was Thunderhill. Even thought most of the field had moved on to other things, the one thing that would remain the same is the stop watch. As you all know we run Thunderhill the most so track time wasn't an issue. This took some serious focus. If you asked most racers what was more in important, getting faster and improving as a rider or riding around at the same pace and collecting wins, I'm sure majority would want to improve. I was stuck at a plateau. It wasn't until big brother Billy Catching got out the pit board and I was able to try some different things. Success, chipping away tenths here and there was finally adding up to a great lap. After being stuck in the 1.55's I finally broke in the 54's in August with a 1.54.852 breaking the old record of a 1.55.139. This would not be the end. The final round at Thunderhill I would do a 1.54.826 again setting a new record in the Formula IV race.
So when the year was all set and done, we had 26 starts with 25 wins. It was indeed a year to remember. We all know this sport is a very expensive one and I couldn't have done it without the continued support of my sponsors, family and friends. Andy Palmer and the whole AP MotoArts team, Billy Catching and Catching Competition, Riley's Brewing, Racefuelz, RxUnlimited, Catalyst Racing Composites, NJK Leathers, 5Zero4 Designs, Track Daz, Yoshimura RD, CT Racing, Pirelli Tires, Attack Performance, Group 22, TWF Racing, and MC Pro Designs. Thank you all again.
