64-bit

Its really up to you. For a general idea of how the processor speed compares check out this chart

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html

Of course the numbers themselves are meaningless, but 491 vs 7200 gives you an idea of the difference between your processor and a modern one.

well that hurt.....:( i'm takin my toys and hittin the bricks...however based upon this data i ain't gettin far.

My priorities may have just changed.

BTW thanks fellas for the insight good bad or indifferent.

All modern processors support 64-bit.
32-bit OS supports 4GB of ram, but 3.5GB in windows.
64-bit supports 16TB of ram or more.

If you're a hardcore gamer then get 64-bit

is the P4 really that bad?? or is you makin fun of me. Honestly i don't really need W7 just as i don't really need 64-bit either....it's pretty much like scooters ya don't really need ABCD but ya sure lust after them.:)

He's a bit full of it. a P4 @ 3ghz will run Win 7 just fine. You just need to be SURE you have enough ram to make it happy (4GB min). Sure it won't set speed records, but for the "average user" it will perform just fine.

FFS, I'm rocking a AMD 5200+ on Win7 with 8GB and the damn thing is perfect for what I do.

i am just an avg user and do no gaming at all so adding 2g ram and perhaps upgrading the HD.

windows 7 64-bit takes 1.2-1.9GB on the startup ( depends on ur hardwares)
Your system will need extra 512mb/1gig of ram if you have 512mb/1gb video card.

If you're not gaming/editing videos then stick with 32-bit, 32-bit W7 is fine for browsing and watching video.. you dont need to add 2 of ram unless you're planning to runing raid 0. I think just 1 wd caviar green is fine. Its a waste of money adding more ram if you dont know how to configure ur ram in the BIOS, and you need to get the same brand/model to match the ones in ur system to run faster. Running different ram and timing and thats how people get the blue screen of death.

Are you running DDR 2? i think 2gigs stick laying around, ill hook u up if you really need it

No clue :) and thank you kindly for the offer. If available/possible i'm going to try and obtain a 32-bit i3 chip of some sort, boost the HD as its only 80G and retain my XP....bottom line me hasen't a clue bout this here IT stuffins.

DANGER will robinson. Depending on the installation of XP you have. You might be forced to "re-activate" windows XP if you change more then a couple pieces of hardware.

Or, best yet. If you are building a new PC and re-using your XP disk, you should be OK.

suffice it to say i hit the brakes altogether. Next year i'll have one built instead of upgrading my current system.

The hardware has been 64bit for some time, just the software is catching up.

Using a 64 bit new OS is best, unless you have a older printer or scanner... check for new drivers... if none available, may not work. (Not due to the bit issue, but simply the new OS)

Agreed. However there is a bit of a workaround with quite a number of products. Use a windows xp, 2k 64bit driver. Works for most printers n such.
