Who is or wants to ride South to the Santa Barbara area on Thursday 7/3 or Friday 7/4? You can keep heading south or or stop where ever you'd like.

I will be staying with my bestfriend in Santa Barbara and will be there for the weekend, heading back to the bay the following Sunday or Monday.

Is anyone else heading that direction and want to ride together? I would prefer to ride with a group than alone.

Leaving early Friday would work.....leaving Thursday would also be nice.

Whose Down?

Wow... I need to visit my son in Santa Barbara, and I'd LOVE to ride down there (was figuring I'd have to cage it at some point, because I don't want to ride that far alone, either), but I'm not sure I could coordinate on such short notice! :nerd

If I were able to manage it, I have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off, so I'd definitely have to head home Sunday.... so tempting... :x

hey, i'm heading down to Nipomo on July 4 early morning at about 8:00am. Would enjoy some company for the 6 hour ride if I was to take HWY 1 all the way down. I've heard about traffic jams on certain areas on HWY 1 so I may be looking for an alternate route. What are some of the roads you plan to ride when you head down?

I've heard that there is an eleven mille strech of Hwy 1 that is closed due to fire by Big Sur. It could be open by next week though, but thought I would give a heads up about it.

looks like i might be able to make this trip, let me know what time thurs. or fri. friday would be better for me cash wise but thursday just might work, i wold like to make it to the famers market in SLO. not a road racer but hwy 1 is cool with me. have no schedule just a margarita at avila beach with my name on it. ill be in touch again on monday.

Thanks for the update about Hwy 1 might being closed in a certain area. My initial route was going to be 101 - 17 - 1. Figure I could save some time on my trip by starting the HWY1 ride in Santa Cruz then go all the way down to Nipomo. Plan to leave at about 8am, Friday July 4th. I'm over in Oakland. :troy Anyone else interested in joining me or the others are more than welcome or if you guys have another meet up spot or alternate routes that could save time and offer more fun, suggestions are more than welcome. Don't really want to do the whole freeway thing too much.:teeth

i am thinking of heading to LA that weekend, unsure as of yet.
i was actually thinking of some sort of inland route, like 101->slo->???, but i have no idea what or how much is closed to fires.

i'm really slow on 1... and part of it is closed right now (just check the caltrans road conditions site for updates). there really aren't 'alternates' in big sur.
speaking of which, take 101 to 156 to 1 if you want to save time--1 is just a freeway from 17 to watsonville, and not super interesting 'til you get past carmel. (well, i actually like the freeway in seaside because of the dunes, but it is a freeway.)

I havent done the ride on a bike either. I typically just go 680 to 101 and Im there when I drive. Depending on the fire situation it would be nice to get a little coast riding in.

Seeing how some parts may be closed, taking the 101 wouldn't be a big deal and would save time. Still though, I would like to take hwy 1 just cause I have never and people have been telling me all these wonderful things about the 1. Thinking about taking the route mbsv suggested about 101-156-1. Still worried about the closure at Big Sur. Anyway, more advice is always welcomed.

Hwy 25 is a good alternative for part of the distance. From there, consider Peachtree / Indian Valley. I don't know if there are closures impacting these roads.

*edit* The CalTrans site shows no fires impacting these routes. Depending upon your fuel range, you can go either east or west to fill up at the junction of Hwy 25 and Hwy 198 (though east is more fun). Otherwise, continue south on Peachtree / Indian Valley, and fill up at San Miguel. From there you can find lots of fun roads. You should strive to include Hwy 229 (Rossi's Driveway) and Tepusquet, as well as the requisite visit to the Solvang Moto Museum.

friday morning is good for me, still some pain in my feet but should be good to go, did ask about route and time cause of where im coming from.

I'm still going. So should we plan a meet spot for the East Bay Riders and then meet up with other riders as we go down while we are making gas/piss stops? I'm over in Oakland. Motobig is down south I believe. Route I'm thinking about taking is 101 down to 152 (meet up with Motobig) then to the 1 for the rest of the way down. Waddaya think guys. By the way, I'm riding the CB-1 down so I'm gonna be buzzing around not blasting down the hwy just checking out scenery :ride and my tank is pewny so I'm gonna have to stop every 130 or so miles to fill her up. Hope this isn't gonna damper anyones "spirited" ride. What's everyones idea pace anyway?

so gilroy is a good place to meet? is hwy 1 open all the way down? my 1000 has a range of 130 so thats fine and not in any rush so any pace is fine. from where i live it takes me 1hour 20min to get to gilroy...outlets well by in and out burger there is a gas station is that ok or were you getting 152 some where else?

1 is still closed in big sur, check the caltrans site.
i'm planning on heading to atascadero or thereabouts tomorrow evening, then 58/33/1 to the santa monica area.

I checked the caltrans site and they closed more hwy 1 road. If you did do 101->152->1 you would have to make a left on "Carmel by the Sea" and head southeast for 40 miles for the 101 , avoiding Big Sur and the coast. You could then take "CR-G14/Jolon Rd" west back to the 1 for the remainder.

Anyone know anything about CR-14/Jolon Rd?

I couldnt figure out how to save my google map to show you all.

I hate google maps...why I cant just SAVE the directions as My Map is lame.
